    BCS question / scenario

No one has talked about this, but a very distinct possibility……

Arkansas beats LSU on Friday in a very close game. Most likely the top 3 in the BCS stays the same Bama, LSU, and Arkansas (doesn’t matter what order). For example, Bama goes to the SEC championship game and loses to GA, making GA the SEC champion. GA automatically goes to a BCS game, but in the final BCS rankings LSU and ARK would be #1 and #2, but there is a rule that only 2 teams from a conference can go to the BCS, meaning that the #2 can’t play for the championship. So Okie St. the new #3 team would end up playing Arkansas/LSU for the championship.

Or is there a rule that would allow the SEC to have 3 teams to play if they have their conference champion, not be #1 or #2? i looked and didn't see one, probably assumed that never could happen.

    Re: BCS question / scenario

If you're ranked in the top 4 you get an automatic bid if you aren't the conference champion. So I think in this case the rule about 2 teams from the same conference in a BCS Bowl is waived and the SEC would get 3, with LSU and Ark playing for the title and Georgia going to the Sugar Bowl.

    Re: BCS question / scenario

The automatic bids go to #1 and #2 in the BCS standings, and all conference champions from the "BCS" conferences. So if #1 and #2 are in the same conference and neither are conference champions, all three go.

So yes, it is possible for the national championship to be between two teams from the same conference, and neither team even PLAYED in their conference championship game.

    Re: BCS question / scenario

I don't think this can happen the way you've layed it out here. If Arkansas beats LSU Arkansas would likely go to number 1. LSU beat Bama head to head. With Arkansas in the CCG, wouldn't LSU still be ranked ahead of Bama? IIRC the SEC 3-way tie breaker is BCS standings, so all this debate is really going to come down to voters.

It's all very complicated a-la the Big 12 cluster-**** with OU, UT and TTU a few years back. I remember there being a situation where it could have been an all B12 national champ game.

More importantly, can someone draw out the scenario where Oklahoma State can still play for Title? I want to see that happen :)

OSU beats Oklahoma (and ISU loses to Oklahoma, to not diminish OU's ranking any further).

    Auburn beats Alabama.

LSU beats Arkansas, and then Georgia in the SEC championship.

I think this would line up the best case for OSU. Unfortunately, that requires ISU losing and Auburn winning.....
