Going to the NC game without winning conference

I thought after the fiasco where Nebraska went to the championship game without even playing in the Big XII championship they made a rule where you have to have at least represented your conference in a championship game if you weren't your conference champ to play in the national championship game? Obviously they didn't, since Alabama may go to it even if LSU remains undefeated, but did they at least discuss making that rule? That was the year I experimented with recreational drugs, so I may have just made it all up in my head. Does anyone else remember this?

Yeah, I had a few to drink last night. I believe they DID play in the conference championship, but lost, looking back on it, but still backed into the National Championship. They had Eric Crouch back then. I want to say 2000-ish. I believe they got stomped by Miami.

It was 2001. Colorado beat them Thanksgiving weekend. They both had one conference loss after that game. Colorado owned the tiebreaker to go to the Big XII title game.

Nebraska was still ranked #2 after championship weekend.

Re: Going to the NC game without winning conference

Here's a crazy scenario for you.

    Stanford loses to Notre Dame
Virginia Tech loses one more game (@Virginia or ACC Championship)
    LSU loses to Arkansas
    Oklahoma State loses to Oklahoma
SEC west team (Arkansas,LSU, or Alabama) loses to Georgia in SEC championship game.

Only 1 loss teams are Boise State, and the two SEC west teams that did NOT play in the SEC championship game.

The national championship game features two teams from the same conference that did not even play in their conference championship game.

I'm not aware of such a rule. I believe the only criterion is BCS standing; the 1st and 2nd ranked teams play for the championship, regardless of anything else.

2001. A lot of people thought that the loss against CU was just a fluke, an off day for the Huskers. And then they got clobbered by Miami in the NC game.
Oregon should have played instead of the Huskers

This is not correct, as UGA would get the auto bid from the SEC, which means only one other SEC team could go to the BCS.

Hoping for my Boise team to still back their way into it.

That Boise loss really cost 'em. They may have been #3 by now!

How are you going to deny the #1 and 2 BCS teams the right for a NC and also deny the conference champion the right to play in the BCS game they are supposed to automatically qualify for? That is a dilemma.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.

Methinks LSU or Alabama lays an egg.

In that case, the SEC would indeed get 3 teams in the BCS, as the #1 vs. #2 would go to the title game, and Georgia would still get in by virtue of winning the conference.

No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.

And in that senario, with Alabama being #1 before their loss to Georgia in the SEC championship, its possible they could remain in the top 4 of the BCS standings which would guarantee them an auto bid.

In this case you'd have 4 SEC teams in the BCS.
