is there such a thing as a program changing win?

looking at blum's article where all of these BCS busting wins happen, almost none of those winning teams have really gone to the next step.

A&M beats k-state in a huge upset for the big 12 title in '98' but still remains in texas' shadow

cinci crushes rutgers' dream season. although they did make a bcs game, are still hardly a dominant force (although they are having a good season so far...they are sitll in the big east).

arizona beats #2 oregon. 'zona currently sits at 2 wins

pitt defeats wv. pitt has hovered in the land of mediocrity ever since.

KU makes it to a bcs game, and wins. however, they are HORRIBLE now.

TTech has had a number of marque wins and are on a slippery slope to being the worst team in the big 12

None of these teams have gone on to become truly elite after achieving "program changing win". i guess the main factor in all of these teams though is probably coaching turnover. this simply proves we need to keep cpr.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?

Perhaps not one win. But anyone that has watched CPR over 3 years knows that you can no longer count the Cyclones out.

This is one more tool in the bag that CPR can use to recruit and to continue to build a list of look at what we can do at ISU. Keep adding those up and putting things together and who knows....... but that's why it's so much damn fun to watch.

I hope our day with come that we get to compete not just for a bowl game but for conference championships. The fact that we are letting it be known that we will compete with the top dogs in our conference is just a burst of confidence for all the young men who suit up in the Cardinal and Gold.

Perhaps not one, but a compilation of wins can, and Rhoads is developing a reputation as a giant killer, and this one was huge in establishing our program in the eyes of prospective recruits and others in the college football world.

The difference between being really close, or almost getting a big ones, and getting big ones on a fairly routine basis are night and day.

Next step is to beat a good team that isn't looking ahead or coming down from a big game.

That sounds like i'm minimizing some of the wins...I'm not.

None of those teams had Paul Rhoads at the helm. There's just something about that guy.

Whether we make it to 9-10 win seasons with regularity, I don't know. What I do know is that we will never go away with Rhoads at the helm.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?

We got a huge boost in the public opinion department but in real material return does this win generate any? Not trying to demean the win an honest question?

Does this give us a boost in recruiting? I still don't see any of the big prospects coming here because it. We could catch the attention of some pretty good recruits who are feeling snubbed by the big schools and may view us as a way to "get back" to those other schools.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?

In the Shaggybevo thread, there are several people talking about Coach Rhoads, and looking forward to the locker room video as soon as the game was over. I don't think a billion dollars in advertising could buy our program that much respect.

Right now CPR is doing it with 2 and 3 star athletes. Hopefully the 4 star athletes start believing in CPR and it keeps building.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?

One of the biggest things that helps our recruiting is that we play in the Big 12 conference. That may seem ironic considering the realignment fiasco, but we play the "fun" kind of football in the Big 12 that every kid wants to play.
Kind of like uptempo basketball. That's what the kids want.

I see what you're saying but that is hardly ever going to happen in this league. Every week, you will have one of those things happening more often or not.

I don't think a win like this can change the program instantly, however it's an important cog in building to the next level. Look at any teams that didn't traditionally have power programs, and how did they build up? Wins like this, winning games you are expected to win, and incrementally moving up the food chain.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

Going to Norman next week and getting a win will take care of all of that. OU just ratcheted up the preparation for this coming weekend...going on the road and winning at a place hardly anyone ever wins in would be a nice "next step!"

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?

CPR has had a bunch of great games before, but this is the first one that really goes out and says something on a national level. No qualifiers on this one.

Nebraska? they werent that great and NU was a fumblefest.
Texas?- everyone got a piece of texas last year.
    Iowa? Even minnesota beat iowa.
OSU?- No such qualifiers. We beat a solid team that appeared headed for, at worst, a 1 loss season.

You got something there. You go back to the first season there were real small baby steps. The first road win in several years against Kent State. May seem small now but it was huge back then. From that you have wins at Nebby, bowl win, win at Texas, win at TTU and finally this. Each one gets progressively bigger and more momentous. And the following big wins probably don't occur if the small ones prior don't happen.
