Lets say the Griese plays well. He isn't the QB of the future for the Bears. He isn't a long term solution. Do they stick with developing Grossman or cut their losses and pick up someone they can develop for the future. Big questions.

Put in Kyle! Wait, he is no better than the other two. But at least he is young and could learn.

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

While hopefully the team can rally around a new leader, this may be a little too late. I really feel that the air went out of Chicago when Mike Brown was injured in week 1. He is/was the heart and soul of that defense. Trading away their only good running back in the off season (Jones) was a HUGE mistake. With all of the injuries on defense it is going to be a long season.

Side note rant: How in the world can they organization be so incredibly good drafting and developing defensive talent, and so atrocious and stubborn on the offensive end?

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

If they were going to make this move they should have done it last year. Griese can be ok with a decent running game but he can't make the throws that Grossman (potentially) can. A friend of mine (who plays for the bears) said that Griese cant make the deep out or the hard middle range throws and thats why he hasn't had a chance. Quinn sure would look good in a Bears uniform right about now...

The Thomas Jones comment is spot-on. They let go the only real stable/reliable/productive part of that offense.

It could be a situation like it Baltimore. Steve McNair is definitely not the long-term solution for the Ravens. Boller went to the backup roll and when he got another shot when McNair went down, he performed very well.

Let Grossman go to the backup roll...he is still a young QB who needs to improve. If he doesn't, the Bears will need to go the free agency route. I wish the Bears would have figured this out last year...Matt Shaub would have been a perfect fit in Chicago.

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

The Bears didn't do anything in the off season to address the weaknesses that prevented them from winning the Super Bowl. In fact, they made what problems they had worse.

Trading Thomas Jones, a back who regularly produced +120 yds per game was silly. Benson hasn't shown that he can carry the ball 40 times a game and be effective. He ran well last season because he could come in during the fourth quarter and pound a tired defense into submission.

And while I was a Grossman supporter in the past, he's much more effective at managing games than trying to win them. He gets into trouble by trying to force the ball to receiver's that are covered. Without a running game that can roll up 200 yds, he's forced to pass more, leading to interceptions.

So why didn't the Bears trade for a more effective backup? Griese's aggressively mediocre at his best, and while I love Kyle "Neckbeard" Orton, I don't think he can win games without a strong running game either.

Unfortunately, I think the Bears are in for a long season. Must be the Super Bowl curse.

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

Great post sdillon - this was to some extent a self-inflicted wound by the Bears.

I can't say I feel sorry for 'em...they had a full season last year to see what Rex was...or should I say...wasn't.

It's one thing for a young guy to slowly progress and have growing pains. It's another for the guy to continue making the same mistakes, again and again.

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

The reason the Bears didn't figure out Grossman last year is because he performed so well early in the season. While he had 5 or 6 bad games, he also had 5 or 6 Peyton Manning-like games. Its hard to turn your back on that...especially when the Bears were winning nearly every game.

I think Grossman's true colors showed up after the Bears season finale against the Packers (the Bears got waxed) saying something like "I knew this game didn't mean anything blah blah blah". The NFC is still bad enough for the Bears to make the Playoffs...especially if Griese is even average. While they are 1-2, their losses are to San Diego and Dallas. It's a long season.

I think a mobile QB would work well in the Bears offense, especially with two solid tight ends.

Re: Rex Grossman Benched - Griese to start vs Lions

I call bullsh...well...you get the idea.

While Grossman did start the season off last year in a good way, Manning-like games? 5 or 6 of them? Laughable.

    Here's a link to his 2006 stats...

ESPN - Rex Grossman Stats, News, Photos - Chicago Bears - NFL Football

You'll notice, he had just 5 regular season games where he completed 60% or more of his passes (and only 2 over 70%). Manning did that 11 times (7 at 70% or more).

In only 8 games did Grossman throw more TDs than INTs. Manning 11 times (plus 4 games in which the TD and INT number was the same).

And don't even get me started on the disparity on yards per attempt.

Grossman maybe had a couple Manning-like games. Otherwise, he was average, below average or just plain horrible.
