    The Three Man Rush

Is this the game where we see the return of the three man rush we used on Missouri last year?

Iowa State has had problems getting pressure on the opposing quarterback all season. Now we find ourselves matched up with not only the best QB in the league, but the best offensive line. Iowa State would have to blitz on every play to have any chance of getting some sacks on this line. I could see us dropping 8 guys in coverage and using our line to try and clog up some gaps.

Do you mean "two man rush"? That's what Wally used against Missouri most of the game last year.

Tech's QB may not agree with you...

Sounds like a great idea. Just hope that Okie State decides not to a short passing game just to open it up long later. Personally I feel that we need to hit the qb about every play. I could care less if the hits are a tad bit late. Just let him know we are there.

Ok state runs the ball well too. It won't surprise me if we run into a situation like we did vs baylor this year. Everyone thought baylor would kill us throwing it, but they quietly ran for 390 yards.

If we rush 3 guys, Weeden will pick us apart and put up 80. Little different than the Missouri game last year.

i'd say gabbert is the better quarterback of the two, but weeden has much better recievers, and a running back with a pulse

    Re: The Three Man Rush

no, a 3 man rush would allow Weeden to hang back and wait for something to open it and he will find people. IMO, we need to gamble with several blitz packages. Make him uneasy. Corner blitz's, safety's, ect... Drop DE into passing lanes ect... Just something different every play so he never knows what is going on. The idea is to get him to think instead of just reacting because when he is able to just react, he gets comfortable and gets into a zone and just picks teams apart.

Rushing 3 gives Wally more blitz options. Right now we can't risk blitzing a LB. With 4, we could.

    Re: The Three Man Rush

I've watched both Weeden and Gabbert play a ton over the years. Gabbert was always that guy that you knew could be something special. Had the arm, could make all the throws, normally played smart. But he just wasn't there yet. He would make a critical mistake at the wrong time or would put himself in harms way unnecessarily.

They have the about the same arm strength though Gabbert didn't always throw the tightest spiral and that made the ball easier to get blown around in bad weather. Just look at the last game versus Tech. Weeden threw the ball all day long without issue (only 7 of 38 passes hit the ground). Doege from Tech could pass in the middle of the field but once he got to the end zone, his passes were getting blown all over the place by the swirling winds. There was one on the jumbotron that you could see the ball curve a good 4 feet on a screen pass.

Out of all the QBs I've seen in person over the years, there really isn't a great comparison to what Weeden is doing on the football field this year. I do know that if he was 22-23 instead of 28, he'd be battling Luck for first overall pick in this draft. His skill set is right there.

    Re: The Three Man Rush

ISU ran a three man line again this year against MU and got torched running MU was getting 10 yards a pop. OSU will do much of the same if ISU ran a three man line. Randle is very good and is probably the best back in the big 12. The only postive is Weeden doesn't try to run very much. We may see some three man lines on second and long or third and long but on 1st down and 2nd & 3rd & short we should see 4 down lineman.

I know ISU has been basic defense most of the year but to beat a team like OSU you have to through them a lot of looks and try to get them to make mistakes

    Re: The Three Man Rush

ISU running a 3 man front against Missouri this year was the worst gameplan that Wally and co have drawn up in their 3 year tenure at Iowa State. It made no sense against that team.

I would be surprised if we didn't play a lot of 3 man fronts in the game on Friday. Got to tackle well

We will probably play a base defense. We don't get to the qb anyway stay in gaps plug running holes and hope our secondary steps up to the challenge. NO PFs Johnson!!!!!!!!!!!

We played a LOT of 4-3 zone at Mizzou. They feasted on our 10-yard cushion.

    Re: The Three Man Rush

Weeden's worst game was against Texas A&M last year. They confused the hell out of him. He has improved a ton since then though. It takes a lot to get him flustered. Although your team could watch tape of the first half of the A&M game this year. That game looked like it was going to be his worst ever.
