    O.T.- Wedding Reception Advice

I thought I would turn to my fellow Cyclone fans for some advice....
I'm getting married (to a Cyclone fan!) and we are looking for a unique place to hold our reception. It will be in the Des Moines area, so any advice or suggestions for a location would be appreciated!!!

    Re: O.T.- Wedding Reception Advice

I had my wedding and reception at Jester Park Lodge. It was great. It is a really unique looking building. Kind of a modern day log cabin but big. I think you would really like it. Plus everyone that got to drunk just went down after the wedding. Took some beer and camped out at the camp grounds at Jester park. Solved the drinking and driving problem. Also you may have in your mind a peice of junk lodge and that is not the case. It's a Million dollar building.

I can tell you everything you need to know about receptions in Ames, but I'm not sure for Des Moines. Good luck with everything. Just say "yes dear"

Jester Park Lodge is very nice. I've had several meetings there.

    Another option:

My wife and I (both ISU grads) had our reception in the Memorial Union Sun Room. They handled everything, which was great since we moved to AZ in February and came back for our wedding in September.

    Re: O.T.- Wedding Reception Advice

My wife and I got married almost 4 years ago now. We tried to get Jester, but it is tough. You pretty much have to schedule it a full year out (and that's all the farther you can schedule it). So 365 days before you want it, better be on the phone at 8:00 AM. We tried for a few weeks and just said the heck with it. But it is really nice and would give you a ton of options for outdoor weddings with an indoor backup.

We ended up getting married at Younker's Tea Room - which is now closed. That worked great for us and were really happy with it. Had a short wedding on the stage while people sat at their tables, then went right into drinks and dinner and people didn't have to travel. I'd consider that style of setup. Also had a couple hotels on the skywalk, so that was nice as we got married in December.

The other place that was tops on our list, probably number 1 but too expensive for us, what the banquet room at the Temple for Performing Arts downtown. Beautiful, large banquet room and a little side room that we thought was rather Chapel-like. Again, it was expensive and your only catering option was the Embassy Club which only heaped it on.

We also stayed at the Suites on Grand downtown. Pretty swank, IMO.

Good luck man. May I impart some advice my father gave to me regarding my fiance/wife wanting things done her way that I may not have liked.

"Will it cause you cause you pain?" "No? Then shut up"

Pretty much the same as the "yes dear" idea, I just liked the way he put it.

I say have the reception at Jack Trice on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Invite 45,000 of your closest friends. Just think of the money you'd make and the gifts you'd receive.

Our fearless leader (?) Jeremy and his gal just bought a house in a Des Moines suburb so I'm sure you could have your reception at his place. Heck he even just bought a CF banner that he could hang up in the back yard for you. Swanky.

You can have it in my basement, should be pretty well decked out in ISU gear by then . We are in the final stages of wedding planning, my advice, elope! Or at least stay far away from her the last couple of months leading up to the wedding!

    Re: O.T.- Wedding Reception Advice

yeah, just pick one or two things that you will handle so that you are helping out, like picking out the food, and tell her everything else she chooses is a wonderful decision. We had our reception at Hotel Ft. Des Moines last summer, they took pretty good care of us, it is a pretty cool setting, and there is plenty around for everyone to do later, and plenty of places to stay. For a wedding, it was rather reasonable.

I went to a reception the other month that was at some vineyard that was a little NE of Ankeny. Can't remember what it was called but they have a nice place out there and looks pretty new. Plus they catered in Hickory Park which was yummy. :)

    Re: O.T.- Wedding Reception Advice

I attended a wedding/reception that was at the Botanical Center in Des Moines. It was a very unique location for the wedding and reception.

For the reception, they had the appetizers spread throughout the botanical center, so you had to "explore" the botanical center to find the food.

This may not be an option if you are going to have a large wedding though. I think there were no more than about 150 people at this wedding and the botanical center was pretty full. It is an option that you should checkout since you want a unique location.
