    Interesting Defensive Stat...

...is that, in conference play, we're #1 in pass defense. Oh, and #4 overall defense.

2011 Conference Only Football Statistics - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site

Of course, the former could simply mean "teams that haven't yet played Oklahoma or Oklahoma State", but it's still encouraging.

Think Wally will have any wrinkles up his sleeve for the Cowboys?

    Re: Interesting Defensive Stat...

Pass offenses and how they did against our defense

    .............................average....allowed by ISU
    1. Oklahoma............ 394.2
    2. Oklahoma State......388.3
    3. Baylor.............. 358.7.......212
    4. Texas Tech.......... 344.4....191
    5. Texas A&M........... 297.3....263
    6. Missouri............ 245.4.....289
    7. Iowa State.......... 196.7
    8. Texas............... 182.2.......255
    9. Kansas State........168.4
    10.Kansas.............. 166.6.......127

I think we can agree that us being at #1 isn't completely because we haven't played OSU and OU. At the same time, we have allowed enough yards on the ground that I'm sure that has affected the numbers too.

    Rushing................average.......allowed by ISU
    1. Texas...............228.0..........145
    2. Missouri............224.9..........294
    3. Texas A&M...........211.9.......247
    4. Kansas State........203.7
    5. Iowa State..........201.8
    6. Baylor..............196.2..........391
    7. Oklahoma State......161.7
    8. Kansas.............. 154.1........174
    9. Oklahoma............ 153.3
    10.Texas Tech.......... 109.3.....99

We only held two teams under season average in rushing.

    Re: Interesting Defensive Stat...

5 passing TDs and 15 total offensive TDs for ISU this year, through 6 games. That's brutal. Just a middle of the pack offense this year and we might have had a shot at Texas, Baylor and Mizzou (probably add K-State to that as well). Even with the schedule we've had, our defense has probably played well enough to get us 7 wins. Unfortunately, our offense is most likely going to hold us to 5.

    Re: Interesting Defensive Stat...

Kansas State is 3rd in scoring offense, but 9th in total offense. They're actually getting out-gained by 109 yards per game in Big 12 play, which is currently the 2nd worst margin in the league. So how are they so successful? Here are the keys to their success:

-Touchdowns, not field goals. In conference play K-State is 4th in red zone scoring percentage, but first in red zone touchdown percentage. In 40 trips to the red zone, the Wildcats have 29 touchdowns, 6 field goals, and only 5 empty possessions.

-Field position. K-State is 2nd in conference play in kickoff return average, and they have two returns for touchdowns. In conference play, they have nine kickoff returns of 30 yards or more, which is four more than anybody else. They're also 2nd in kickoff return coverage. Their most dangerous returner, Tyler Lockett, is out for the rest of the year with an injury.

-Turnover margin. K-State is 2nd in the Big 12 with a +9 turnover margin in conference play. They have 17 takeaways and have only turned the ball over 8 times. Oklahoma State is a whopping +15 in conference play. The Cowboys lead the nation in turnover margin and total takeaways.

-Penalties. Kansas State is the 2nd least penalized team in conference play, and their opponents are the most penalized.

In short, K-State is middle to bottom of the pack in talent, but they have a great senior leader in Klein, they're very well coached, and they do all the little things right. Hardly anybody out-coaches Bill Snyder.

15 is for only the 6 conference games that we've played.

That stat does not bode well for our offense.

On the other hand, if they have a bad night and ISU wins the turnover battle, they may be more beatable than they appear. Kansas State is the only Big 12 team so far to win the turnover battle against Okie State. K-State stayed in that game by winning the turnover battle and running the ball to take time off the clock. They also had a big kickoff return and a pick six. It will take that kind of effort for ISU to win, but we already knew that.

Maybe they are ranked 1, 2 and 3 because they haven't had to play us yet.

very interesting stuff in this thread. playing smart wins games. field position, turnovers, penalties.

things we have struggled with all year. Things paul rhoads said blue collar teams don't struggle with.

I hadn't actually looked at the stats...that's pretty terrible. Our offense has been pretty offensive here in conference play, at least in terms of scoring TDs.

I think a lot of it stems from youth/inexperience at key positions on offense. Our starting center and QB are both freshmen. Jantz is a junior but doesn't really have a lot of experience playing QB. The turnovers aren't surprising. More surprising is the personal fouls from our seniors. That hasn't been real common in Rhoads' other two years so I'm not too worried.

We have not scored much for three years or more. Time to light it up. We score like we play in the SEC or Big Ten.
