    Mike Matheny new Cardinals manager

Not sure how to feel about this.... Anybody have insight as to why he got the nod over Francona or Oquendo?

Just saw this on Facebook and was about to post. Not sure how I feel either. Reactions on FB seem to be mixed.

Some guys got it and if you believe what you read, ... he's got it. Certainly a risky move. ISU hiring the Mayor is a good analogy, imo.

The big question for me, is Dave Duncan staying on as pitching coach?

I'm guessing Duncan is there for at least one more year - he has a year left on his deal and Matheny is an in-house hire.

Coming from a White Sox fan...did not see this hire coming at all!

I agree I think he stays around one more year to help bridge the gap in the staff and a new pitching coach.

Re: Mike Matheny new Cardinals manager

As a fan, its not that I don't think that Matheny will do a good job. Hes a very intelligent guy and definitely knows how to handle a pitching staff and manage a game (given his performance on the field). However, he's never coached before, so this seems like a huge step. Also, like some others have said, what about Oquendo? I honestly thought he had the inside track and I wonder if he might feel a little slighted getting passed over by someone who has no coaching experience whatsoever. I hope Matheny will be able to come in and retain Duncan and Oquendo and use them as mentors for the first couple of years.

Re: Mike Matheny new Cardinals manager

I like the move. I agree that it's risky but the front office has to know something we don't.

You feel the floor give you a little tingle, man, Iowa State junior point guard Monte Morris said in a private moment after the game, leaning against a wall in the bowels of Hilton Coliseum. You feel it. You feel it. Its real. You feel it on the court. Its a tough feeling to explain. Its a vibration. It gets you going.

    He paused.

    Its magic.

I also feel bad for Oquendo and hope they can keep him around. I wonder if he would have had a better shot had the Cards not just won the WS. Coming off a championship, the club has a little bit of a grace period and can roll the dice a bit with Matheny. All that said, I am not opposed to Matheny by any means.
