    "PG" play?

How was the "PG" play today? Was it improved from the exhibition?

I thought they got into their offense really well, and were effective in breaking down the defense when they needed to. Might have had 100 if they had kept focused for the last 8 minutes.

Still a weakness on the team. Even if Scotty does a good job, it takes him out of his scoring element, which hurts the team. I won't be the least bit surprised if Long ends up playing this year...

Not good, not horrible either. You won't really notice it in these types of games.

Scotty drives into the lane and gets it poked away a lot. We just not think Sledge is ready to play.

Better, but not good. Scotty did a decent job, and Royce was... well, pretty stellar all things considered.

    Re: "PG" play?

Scotty's ball handling is very suspect. I think he will be a turnover machine in the B12. With that said, I'm not concerned with getting the ball up the court any more. Royce is definitely competent enough that very few big men will be able to stop him from doing that if we choose. And overall you're almost always going to have 3-4 players on the court that are pretty good ball handlers. Ejim will be our worst ball handler most of the time, and that's not a knock on him.

Where we will struggle when we get into B12 play, is our penetration out of the PG position. That is where Scotty will get eaten alive.

That means Royce will have to initiate a lot of the offense, which should work fine but when we find ourselves in games where it's not working, we'll struggle a bit.

Overall, I feel better than I did before today, but I still think it will cause us problems down the road.

I agree that Royce does seem comfortable bringing the ball up, but what happens in conference play? I think teams will choose to press ISU a lot, and may have success. ISU doesn't have someone like DG this year, who can break a press by himself.

Can Long play this year? Do we have an open spot for him on the roster?

If so, it certainly can't hurt, but he will have a lot to learn in a very short time.

I thought our offense looked a bit better today, but we were hitting our 3's really well, which always helps.

I kinda wish we wouldn't have given up our 26 pt lead, but at least it gives Fred something to work on.

Scotty's dribbling concerns me. Sledge has to be a better ball handler than Scotty, right?

    Re: "PG" play?

The entire team can penetrate from the perimeter with the exception of Booker and Railey. I don't think we will see a traditional point guard the entire season, but thats fine when you have a team that can all handle the ball, penetrate, shoot, and pass. I will agree that we look better when Scottie is dribbling less.

    Re: "PG" play?

Scotty is a great player but is REALLY funny when he does this little side to side body move with a huge head shake..... then jumps up in the air and looks for someone to pass.... He did it for about 5 straight minutes toward the end of the game.

    Freaking hilarious.

In breaking the press, it may actually be better to have 4 pretty solid ball handlers, as opposed to one true PG and another guard that can handle.

I don't think that will be as big of an issue because Scotty, Allen, McGee, Royce, Babb and Bubu can all handle fairly well. Maybe not "true PG well", but well enough.

And even Booker is no slouch for a big man.
