Thoughts on the 07-08 Starting Line Up

I was reading on Cyclones.com that Wes Johnson had been working on dribble drive penetration this off season. Does anyone thing that Wes could possibly slide over to a 2 guard? That way could start Brackins in the frontcourt and only have find a freshman point, which I'm guessing would be Diante Garrett.

Wes is to good of a rebounder and not a good enough ballhandler to move away from the front court.

I would have to agree with cyred, even if he did develop his ballhandling skills. he can jump and we need him down low getting rebounds.

I see Wes as a versatile 3, where he would create some matchup problems. He'll probably be a 2 in the NBA, if he improves like I think he will.

I think eventually Wes will be a tremendous SF, but for now his skills aren't ready. Once he can put the ball on the floor and create, the kid will be impossible to defend. He's going to be a special player by the time he leaves here. Can't believe he's only a sophomore.

im interested in staiger he looks like hes already big 12 built and if he can shoot and handle like people were saying during the cap city league he might see time at the startign 2 gaurd. i think garret staiger rashon wes jiri with brackens thompson and CJ coming in. Also haluska could see a lot of minutes it really will be fun to see how it all plays out

He'll play some 2 eventually. I don't think he'll ever start at the 2. I'm more concerned about his defense at that position in the short term than his ball handling. Also, it's typical that McDermott keeps 2 back on D. What a waste if one of those is Wes or Rashon.

I would put Brister at SG instead of Staiger but that is just me.

Re: Thoughts on the 07-08 Starting Line Up

I've seen Garrett and Staiger play. Also watched Brackins. They are all really good! Staiger has a body for the Big 12 even though he is a freshman(he looks like he is 25). Garret is cocky, yet has a confident game. Brackins will eventually be a star. I would agree with your lineup. I think we will be good this year. Maybe a 5th place Big 12 team which should get us into the tourney. GMac is a very good coach.

Re: Thoughts on the 07-08 Starting Line Up

I just don't see Brackins on the bench the whole year. He is a really special player. As for Wes, maybe his growth spurt hurt his ability to play the two because that is his natural position. He played the two in high school before he grew five inches. I think to best utilize him, he should play the three and Clark should play the 4 spot. Clark played some PF in high school. He can't shoot from the outside and most of his buckets are around the hoop anyway. Wes has a decent outside shot that is improving. It will be interesting to see who starts.

Re: Thoughts on the 07-08 Starting Line Up

I can see Wesley in a Scottie Pippen role as a point forward at times if he can start to handle the ball more. Scottie was an all around good player and still got his rebounds in that role and I could see WJ doing the same if he can penetrate off the dribble more.

Re: Thoughts on the 07-08 Starting Line Up

Wesley had an assist/TO ratio of 33-62 and shot 29% on threes, not good numbers for a guard. He led the team in offensive rebounds with 98, which led to quite a few points. I don't see him moving out of the front court.

I think CJ will play a much bigger role this year if he can improve his defense. Shot 53% from the field, had a positive assist/TO ratio and gets to the line a lot. His big drawback last year was defense.

Also think Petersen may be playing a lot at the point guard, particularly at the start of the season.
