Re: Bill Smith out as Minnesota Twins GM

Holy Crap, kind of a shocker...
    According to Pohlad:
"The Twins goal is to get better in 2012 and beyond. Bill was equally motivated to achieve that goal but we differed in the scope and approach that was required."
Not sure what to read into that.

Maybe Cuddyer definitely is going to Philly and he and his agent told the Twins to get lost, ****** over the joke of an extension Smith offered in the season? Mgmt mad that he's alienated players (just spitballing).

Somewhere apparently there was a huge disagreement...can't wait for it to come out on exactly what it was.

Some sort of fallout...I think remembering some of the rumblings from before that I'm not sure he was completely well liked by the players.

    Very strange.

Very odd move by the Twins...never fire anyone, and very odd timing on top of it.

Huh....hmmmm....not sure what to feel about this move.

I kind of feel bad for Bill being the fall guy b/c there was plenty of blame and bad luck to go around this year; however, I've also heard some things about Bill being primarily responsible for letting the Twins farm system slip.

    Twins fire Smith

He probably deserved to be replaced based on some of the decisions he's made, but this really came out of nowhere. I think the bullpen moves, along with the Japanese SS signing, where his waterloo.

Disagree with this, when he took over Nick Blackburn was the top prospect in the system. The system was pretty barren but over the past few years the Twins have spent more abroad and actually had some pretty nice drafts as well. Smith's downfall were some terrible terrible trades- Santana, Delmon x2, Hardy, and Ramos.

This is true, AND the farm system is depleted (you basically saw the Twins' AAA team last season playing in the majors; absolutely nothing ready). Billy unloaded a lot of prospects for questionable return to bring in guys like Matt Capps. Most of his big trades stunk, but many of the hardcore fans are most upset with him mortgaging the future to "win now"...which obviously never happened, but that can be the subject of another rant.

Oh no, I agree, and I wasn't a huge Smith fan by any means.

It's just very odd for the Twins. Strange timing, all reports, from mgmt and in the papers seemed to indicate Smith was not in any danger.

Just kind of crazy in that the Twins really haven't truly fired anyone involved with the major league operation since they fired Ray Miller and replaced him with TK in 1986.
