    Carpet steam cleaners

I want to buy one of these bad boys and was wondering what are some that you all use. I'd like to keep it under $200. Gracias.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

When I feel the need to steam clean my carpets, I just rent the Rug Doctor. Way better investment, as I think I have steam cleaned my carpets 2 times ever.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

Crappy steam cleaners will leave soap residue in your carpet and make the problems worse. Generally speaking, even some professional steam cleaners qualify as crappy.

I'd rather just have my own, though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't there a difference between a shampoo'er and a steamer? As in the steamer only uses steam?

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

After borrowing someone else's and being really impressed, we bought a Bissell ProHeat. It got spots out of our carpet that the professional couldn't. I honestly don't remember what I paid - but I do know it was a good deal as Target slashed the price and gave us a $10 or $20 gift card bonus for buying it.

My one warning is that it is time consuming. I run soap over the carpet at least 1-3 times, but then run just clean hot water 1-3 times. It's amazing how it just keeps pulling more and more and more dirty out of the light colored carpet that didn't even look that dirty to begin with. The upside is that if we were waiting to have a professional come in, we'd just keep putting it off until the house looked like we were homeless squatters living in our own filth.

We generally do one room at a time. A couple weekends ago I spent a couple hours cleaning the carpets in my husband's home office and the hallway. That carpet hadn't been cleaned since we moved in 6 years ago and while there was a little of a traffic pattern visible, now it looks brand new! I'm also amazed at how much water the cleaner pulls out of the carpet so the dry time is short.

Overall, two thumbs up for the Bissell ProHeat.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

Can't recommend them. If your carpet is newer, the fiber is already easy enough to spot clean just with simple solutions and a white rag. Those steamers won't meet the clauses in your warranty and you'll still need to hire a professional cleaner to keep your warranty valid. All I've seen from those machines is carpet that has to get torn out sooner rather than later.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

My mother worked as a realtor for 20+ years and she said that Dirt Doctor types of cleaners in general caused a lot more problems than actually did good. I have a feeling this had more to do with people that didn't know what they were doing, using too much water, ruining carpet pads, etc.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

I also have Bissell Pro Heat and have used it several times from cleaning dampened carpet in the basement from excessive rain to cleaning my boat carpet. I also have a rental property and have used it when tenants move out. Very happy with it.

    Re: Carpet steam cleaners

If you have kids I'd recommend one. They are very handy for quick spill/puke clean ups. Get the style with a hand held attachment. There are plenty of times I just need a quick spot clean.

We have a steamer that you can also use soap with. Don't know if it's an issue, but as others have noted, carpet warranties are void if you don't have them professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.

Other than soap, you have the issue of whether the vacuum is powerful enough to suck the water back out. If it's not, the moisture can cause mold and mildew in it or especially your pad.

I also have a Bissell Pro Heat and am very satisfied so far. I think they basically break even on the machines and make their money on the chemicals. I went with the Bissell based on a Consumer Reports rating.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Just ran across this deal for a rug doctor, didn't know if it would be helpful or for something for you to look at. Just thought I'd share.
