Why do we have no tradition in football?

I often wonder about that. We really should, based on how long ISU has been playing football. But we don't.

Here is a very interesting site that I visit a LOT for historical information:

    Jim and Sherri's Home Page

Strange title, I know. But based on the information in this site, ISU has been playing football longer than any other Big 12, CUSA, PAC 10, or SEC school. The ACC and Big East each have only one school playing football longer than ISU.

Re: Why do we have no tradition in football?

ISU was well on its way to building FB tradition in the '70s. Then Bruce left (or was run off, depending who you talk to), the wrong replacement was hired, and ISU was blessed with a couple of anti-athletic program presidents. Tradition promptly squashed...

Maybe if w had named our team the SoyBeans we would have won more games. I am only guessing that this is the fault of Iowa City. The Squaks are to blame for our plight.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Re: Why do we have no tradition in football?

We were on our way to tradition in the 70s and 80s. First with Johnny Majors who took most of his ISU recruiting class with him to Pitt and won the national championship. Then AD Lou McCollough and Majors did not get along well. McCollough was a control freak and Majors needed a stadium and facilities he didn't think he'd get. Majors was the real deal in a coach.
ISU had another opportunity with Earle Bruce. I think Bruce would have stayed if his dream job at Ohio State hadn't opened up. He went 8-3 there two years straight, but was fired because of the 3 losses. In reality, he didn't have a chance following a legend, Woody Hayes. Bruces successor didn't not do as well as Bruce.
ISU hired Donnie Duncan, who couldn't coach and down we went.
Interesting fact, Duncan changed everything that had been successful, including the uniforms, to make ISU look like Oklahoma, where he came from. Even the logo was made to look like "OU" (look at the gallery on this site) he was a flop. ISU had been ranked with both Majors and Bruce and could have been that perenial power we all want.

So what you're saying here is that we need to invent a time machine, and send pollard back in time to when Johnny Majors was here and let Pollard do his thing (which would have let Majors do his thing)...

    Why No Tradition

It will always to be tough for ISU to annually compete for Big 12 North titles over an extended period of time. The state of Iowa doesn't produce more than a handful of Big 12/Big 10 caliber HS players each year. Compare that to Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, etc which have schools with strong traditions.

For ISU to be successful the AD has to make the perfect decision on hiring a coach. Then he's got to hope the coach will stick around for 10-15 years or he then makes another good coaching hire. The right coach at ISU will be a guy who can take 2 & 3 star recruits that can thrive in his system.

I'm very encouraged by what is happening in Ames. The results on the field haven't been great- but the fanny's in the stands thus far in the GC era make me hopeful that ISU can draw 60k to each game in 5 years.

You're close actually...we need to learn from our mistakes. Pollard did that in wrestling by not letting Cael get away, and now going with youth in a football coach who we hopefully can keep. Chizik is a copy of Majors, from the South, strong asst. coach and IF we give him the tools can win. So yes, we have to see how we stubbed our toe to not do it all over again. This looks like our best chance.

Re: Why do we have no tradition in football?

Our tradition at Iowa State is losing football games that we're supposed to win such as the toledo game the uni game the kentstate game the drake game ...need I go on?

Until ISU gets a coach like a bob devaney who came into nebraska and won the first 8 games and then went to a bowl game... then your on the way to winning for 50 years or so!!

Losing to toledo uni and kentstate is NOT getting it done!!!
