    Final Oscar Movie Rankings

Ended up seeing most of the movies up for the big awards tonight, here's how I rank the ones we saw:

    1. Whiplash
    2. Birdman
    3. Imitation Game
    4. Foxcatcher
    5. Boyhood
    6. American Sniper
    7. Grand Budapest Hotel
    8. Gone Girl
    9. The Theory of Everything

Biggest surprise for me was how bad Theory of Everything was. Redmayne was great. But the movie itself blew.

Curious to know what others have seen and think.

Am I the only person in the world that thought Birdman was just horrible? Also, Grand Budapest Hotel was awful as well IMO.... and I kinda like Wes Anderson stuff.

Boyhood was my favorite probably, but I haven't seen Imitation Game yet, or Theory of Everything, or Selma, or even American Sniper yet. I did like Gone Girl quite a bit.... very disturbing, but good.

I thought it was excellent as well. But - see my previous post - not a whole lot for me to compare to in this crop of films.

I thought the Grand Budapest was extremely overrated but Ralph Fiennes was just brilliant in it. He really carried that movie on his shoulders.

Whiplash was very, very good. Probably my favorite from the list. Followed by American Sniper and Boyhood. Gone Girl was just a little too creepy for my liking

    Re: Final Oscar Movie Rankings

I'll disagree - I just loved Budapest. It got better with the second viewing, admittedly, but it's just so subtle and well-acted - like all Wes Anderson films. I will say that it isn't my favorite of his films, but it was still excellent.

I didn't think Theory was really all that bad. I mean - if you know anything about Stephen Hawking, what do you really think it was going to be about? And how much can you honestly do? I do agree that Redmayne was terrific and he was my choice for the Oscar.

Of the movies I saw - far and away my favorite was Imitation Game. Theory was probably next, but probably a far bit back. Only also saw Budapest, Birdman, Boyhood. Boyhood I appreciated simply because of the making story and commitment. But overall - I was really bored to tears. Birdman had some really good performances and Michael Keaton definitely should have been 1b for the Oscar. So did Grand Budapest. But I just don't care for those art movies like Budapest or Birdman as much as I do more mainstream movies.

Dying to see Whiplash and Sniper. Tried to get Gone Girl over the weekend - the Oscars WAS a spoiler for me..... Was pretty pumped to see Foxcatcher, but I've heard it panned pretty badly by quite a few people, and that Ruffalo is the real savior of the flick.

Those who have seen Gone Girl - is it scary? I'm curious to read the book, and then watch it (as I love Fincher), but I don't really want to be freaked out.

I'd say "horrible" is a stretch - but no, I wasn't all that crazy about it either. I'm just not crazy about "that type" of movie - and I can't even tell you what "that type" is. I get the character "issues" - but the opening scene and closing scene.... not sure what to make of either. Keaton was terrific, of the movies I saw in the category - Norton would be my choice for supporting actor (I understand Simmons was brilliant). Don't really get Emma Stone getting the nomination - she was good, not sure I see an Oscar caliber part, much less performance, there.
