Want your marriage to last? Small rings and cheap weddings!

According to a new working paper, for the marriage to last you should buy a small ring, have a cheap wedding, invite a lot of people, and have a honeymoon:

However, the industry message that associates wedding expenditures with longer-lasting

marriages has never been statistically evaluated. In this paper, we estimate the relationship

between wedding spending (including spending on engagement rings and wedding ceremonies)

and the duration of marriages. To do so, we carried out an online survey of over 3,000 evermarried

persons residing in the United States. Overall, we find little evidence that expensive

weddings and the duration of marriages are positively related. On the contrary, in multivariate

analysis, we find evidence that relatively high spending on the engagement ring is inversely

associated with marriage duration among male respondents. Relatively high spending on the

wedding is inversely associated with marriage duration among female respondents, and relatively

low spending on the wedding is positively associated with duration among male and female

respondents. Additionally, we find that having high wedding attendance and having a

honeymoon (regardless of how much it cost) are generally positively associated with marriage

    duration.

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

Married 30 years. 1/4 carat ring, $150 dress, 260 wedding guests, pretty inexpensive wedding all around. It must be true.

Or more accurately, marry the kind of person who doesn't make showing off a flashy ring or extravagant wedding their top priority.

Troof....my wife and I didn't go crazy, we've been married 10 years. Her younger sister just had her second flashy wedding about a year ago.

Personally I don't like the engagement ring racket.

Get a big rock and do that move where you hold your hand out so everyone can see how big it is.

It's the equivalent of dogs sniffing each other's ***.

I didn't want a big ring. We were both in grad school, were going to be paying student loans, and my hand isn't very big anyway. I don't really understand why women want those huge rings anyway, is it just a status thing?

Re: Want your marriage to last? Small rings and cheap weddings!

    I'm with you, Carvers...

And guys - not all women want huge expensive rings & weddings...

    1) I hate diamonds. They're overpriced hunks of carbon obtained with the blood and sweat of the modern-day equivalent of slavery.
    2) Small hands. Small ring.
    3) My engagement ring was the plastic ring left on a 2-liter Pepsi bottle. Long story, but I wore it from Mother's Day (when he proposed) to 17 December (when he replaced it with the simple narrow gold band I wear now).
    4) Didn't plan to wear a wedding gown, but I eloped first time, and he wanted me to have the wedding I never had...$250 from a consignment shop.
    5) Church was already decorated (for Christmas)...bonus!
    6) Lots of guests (~300) - reception was sliced meats & cheeses & buns for build your own sandwiches, mass quantities of chips and raw veggies, a keg, and a cash bar.
    7) Wedding party consisted of our kids, so probably the biggest expense was the tuxes for the four boys & PapaLew (who made the satin dresses for the girls).
8)Simple bouquet of yellow daisies and Astormeria, nosegays for the girls of the daisies.
    9) Sadly, no honeymoon. Oh well.

Twenty years this December, and I'm as happy now as I was the day he proposed. :)

My brother-in-law divorced his wife because she made his life "miserable." When pressed for details on his misery, he said she gained ten pounds and bought new jeans online without telling him first. They had been married 10 years. My thought was his misery was more because he wanted to spend more time with his new girlfriend.

Re: Want your marriage to last? Small rings and cheap weddings!

We spent around $500 on our wedding, and quite a bit on her ring, but didn't get outrageous. Bought her a bigger stone a few years later. Did spend about $4000 on the honeymoon.

Huge weddings are a huge waste of money, and I can't imagine starting a new life blowing that amount on that.

^KC, throw in a little fresh fruit and a champaign fountain and the cake, and that was our reception food too. Our "honeymoon" was going to a state park in Minnesota.
