    Royce White will dominate

Also just got back from the game and I share the same thoughts as other posters on Ejim's bright future and our PG issues.

I want to talk about Royce. He seemed very rusty today but give the kid a break -- he hasn't played a real game in years.

Regarding his free throw shooting, I thought his stroke looked great. His first few attempts were all net and I was very impressed with his form. Then out of nowhere he airballs his next one. He was clearly embarrased and I think it got in his head a little. He seemed rattled on the rest of his attempts the rest of the game. He'll recover.

There is something very special about Royce. I remember watching Harrrison Barnes a few times in the high school state tourney and thinking to myself "any time he wanted to he could score on whoever is guarding him." Harrison was almost too unselfish to truly dominate a game like everyone knew he could, and he didn't always seem to play at maximum effort. It was only after 3/4 of a season at North Carolina that the "dominate" switch finally flipped on and Harrison figured out how to really play at the next level.

I see a little of that same quality in Royce. Several times today Royce took the ball and drove on his defender with highlight reel plays. He didn't finish all the time, but every one of them was impressive in its own way.

Let's give him some time. Like months -- not just a few games.

I remember watching Tinsley and Fizer lose at Drake early in their careers. It was pretty sloppy and disapppointing, but you could see the talent that team had. It takes a little while to get all of the pieces working together to build a great team.

This team will be great when we find our point guard and Royce gets comfortable with his game again and flips on the dominate switch.

One of Royce's passes to Ejim under the basket was amazing. One handed and he made that basketball look like a baseball.

    Re: Royce White will dominate

Assistant coach said in the halftime interview that Royce was very nervous coming in to the game. I'm sure he feels the pressure to do well, but I think he will find that Cyclone fans will love him if he just leaves everything on the floor. His game will naturally come to him as he settles down.

Royce did look a little out of it today, but also showed flashes of power and athleticism. I think after a handful of games, he'll knock the rust off, and get in sync with the other guys. I'm not worried - it should bs what we all expected.

He had a dunk, and then went back and blocked the other team, but then passed it bad and it went out of bounds.

It was a good pass, Booker just wasn't expecting it.

    Re: Royce White will dominate

Given the amount of time that Royce has gone without playing a real game, it will take a while before we'll see him take over, IMO.

Really the same could be said to lesser extent for Babb, Allen and Booker. Those guys will have to knock off some of the rust as well.

    Re: Royce White will dominate

People have to remember he is a freshmen, and has never played on this level. The speed, defensive intensity...etc. It will all be new for him. EVERY single player at this level gets a rude awakening when conference season starts and it will be no different for Royce. He is a pup, people make him out to be this 5th year senior or something.

That won't stop people on this board from throwing him under the the bus repeatedly after he has a couple bad games in conference play. Hell I even saw some of it after the first exhibition game.

He will be a stud and one of our great players eventually I think as long as he keeps his nose clean and works hard.

I can see why CFH was praising his passing ability, if I had hands as big as his I would be a great passer too. The ball is literally dwarfed in his hands.

Hard to remember that Royce has yet to play in a D1 game, it will take time, maybe the whole year, people will need to be patient.

    Re: Royce White will dominate

All in all it was a good first game. There was a point of the game where we would have only 1 guy that played last year at all at the D1 level. It'll take some time for them to grow together and stuff, but very pleased with the blocking, shooting and rebounding at the end. One thing I liked about White is that about 4 times I saw him dribble to the basket and then look for a pass instead of shooting, whereas last year I think the team would have just shot it.
