    Non-Conference Schedule

What do we think of the Non-Con schedule? To me it looks pretty weak, besides Michigan and maybe U of I and UNI. Is there any reason why we don't try and strengthen it? I understand that you want to win the non-cons but won't the NCAA take that into account if we end up being a bubble team?

Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

We may all be greatful that we have a weak non-con.

I think, with our conference schedule, we'll need a weak non-con just to be on the bubble.

    this years football schedule....

Seriously though I'm fine with this years schedule. I don't think its that far off of what most teams do. The only exceptions are the programs with a good enough track record that they get invited to high profile preseason tourney's or made for TV match ups. Until we get in on that kind of stuff I'm content with as many winable games as possible prior to big 12 play. We get plenty of chances for marquee wins every week in the big 12 and thats when the commitees start to take notice.

Football and Basketball are apples to oranges for SOS

In basketball a strong SOS helps you get in the dance and get a better seed

In football, unless you are in the BCS (which we won't be) SOS means nothing. All you need is 6 wins. So we should schedule horrible teams in football and start beefing up the schedule in basketball

Take our non-conf schedule. Add two games against Big 12 teams. That's accurate in comparison to schedules around the nation.

Can't compare our schedule to those outside the Big 12 when most of those leagues are playing two less conference games than we are.

If we were playing 16 instead of 18 in league play. And the two teams we added were Arkansas Pine Bluff and Central Michigan I'd say it's weak. In reality those two games are two Big 12 South teams.

Of course nobody outside the Big 12 will be thoughtful or thorough enough to realize this. Big 12 is going to OWN basketball RPI with an 18 game schedule and no Nebraska/Colorado going forward. The addition of TCU won't even matter that much with WVU coming in as another regular top 20 team.

Schedule was discussed in a thread a few weeks ago not going to search right now to find it, and it's OK to bring it up again, regardless.

I think it's a weak schedule, although not all that different than a lot of ISU schedules of the recent past. Which is to say, not all that challenging. 2008-09 was harder; this year's is probably better on paper than 08-09.

As Clones 85 mentioned, "In basketball a strong SOS helps you get in the dance and get a better seed ... we should schedule horrible teams in football and start beefing up the schedule in basketball."

heitclone mentioned getting a higher profile to get early-season tourney invites that would help. If you had that, and could get a couple more home-and-homes (I still push for playing regional teams like Minnesota frequently), along w/ in-state games beyond that, I don't mind a little padding.

My biggest gripe about going too cupcake-ish isn't even directly related to tournament resume. Piling up a bunch of fairly easy wins bulks up the record, but doesn't provide a good feel how a team might compete against conference opponents.

Big 10, Big East, and Pac 10 all have 18 conference games.

Considering the team's situation at PG, this non-con sched. is probably best suited to find a primary player at the one. From what I've read, the PG position is still way up in the air.

    Re: Non-Conference Schedule

Noncon schedule is pathetic. If we lose twice with that schedule, we have to hope for the NIT. The other tournament will be out of the question unless we win the conference tournament.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

    Re: Non-Conference Schedule

If we were looking at a season where there were a bunch of known quantities on the roster and we looked like a likely tourney team, i'd be inclined to agree that it's a weak schedule. With as many question marks as this team has though, i'm fine with the weaker schedule. If it's as good a team as hoped, we'll make it up in conference play.

It would depend on how well they would do in the conference schedule, if that is the case. I think that they would be in the tournament if they had 12-6 record if they lost two non-conference opponents.

Your argument is full of holes. ISU's pre-conference schedule is weak and dozens of teams play an 18 game conference schedule.
