Camp Fire at Tailgate in Public Grass Lots?

I was wondering if anybody knows if it is OK to bring one of those portable camp fire rings with a mesh cover in the grass lots?

I'm not sure if I've seen one in grass lots before, but I know I have seen them in the cement lots surrounding the stadium.

    Anyone's advice is appreciated!

This is what I pulled from there page:
    Tailgating Policies

Please limit your tailgating to one parking space and do not block the path for other vehicles to park. Remember to clean up your area before departing. No glass bottles, kegs or open fires are allowed in parking lots. Tents can be no larger than 10x10.
Is one of these portable rings considered open fire? It is going to be cold tomorrow morning!

I would say they're probably not allowed, I take that to mean an open fire is anything that isn't a grill.

We had a fire pit 2 seasons ago on a paved lot and were asked to put it out.

I would say that it is not allowed. Plus, sounds rather risky considering how dry it has been, although we did get some rain this week.

Dang. Well I guess that is what I needed to know. Unless someone out there knows anything different! Save me the hassle of hauling it along...

Looks like it's not allowed, probably a bad idea with 30 mph winds anyway.

We had a fire pit similar to what you describe in the grass lots last year and they told us to put it out. I'd say that's a definitive no.

We were told at the Iowa game no open fire pits.

Most cities don't allow these things within city limits, so it is probably more Ames' city code, vs ISU rule.

Yeah, it's an Ames city code if I remember correctly. When I was at ISU, one of my professors wanted to have an open fire pit in his back yard for an end-of-semester get together. He went through all of the paperwork to get it approved so it wouldn't get shut down.

Then his ***** neighbor complained, the fire department came, and it got put out anyways.

Re: Camp Fire at Tailgate in Public Grass Lots?

Wait, so am I getting this right... Camp fires are not allowed inside Ames' city limits?

    EDIT:

Nevermind, I found this document stating the requirements for a recreational fire:
    http://www.cityofames.org/modules/sh...?documentid=12

Upon initial glance it doesn't look like a portable fire ring at the tailgating lots would violate any of these conditions (as long as you have means to extinguish the fire).

Disagree, they have cracked down on fires at tailgates since I have gotten out of school. They use to allow them as well as couches, I remember a specific incident in Lawrence, KS, where coals were thrown on a couch on the way out of town, you could see it burn from miles away.....

Well they are not allowed within Des Moines city limits and I believe most of the suburbs as well. I don't think in this day and age, that is that unusual for any city to prohibit them. (not saying I agree).
