    More speed/red light camera info

Looks like there may be a test to the theory that it's "all about the safety".

I can't find any info on it but a state senator from Ottumwa is proposing a new bill that would require all cities with red light/speed cameras to hand the profits over to the general road fund.

My understanding is that this senator doesn't like the idea of these cameras and can easily figure out that they are really about the $$$.

Why does the money going into the general road fund prove anything more than the money going into the general police budget (which is where all the money in CR goes)?

For red light cameras, the proof is obvious. All you have to do is extend the amount of time when both lights are red so that the intersections are completely clear, and you eliminate most of the problems.

Regarding those conversation-hearing units, how sensitive are those speakers? How does that compare to a reasonable level of expected privacy. If I whisper something into your ear I'd say that there's a reasonable expectation of privacy, but if we're having a normal conversation I wouldn't expect such an expectation to be reasonable. I'd think the potential to eavesdrop is still creepy, but I don't know where the legal line is.

Also, in jurisdictions where both parties must consent to a recording to avoid wiretapping charges (a favorite defense used when police officers have arrested individuals for videotaping them in public while they are performing their official duties), would units like this require standing warrants to allow their use?

I don't know, but I would guess if these surveillance devices work as intended, they will be capable of violating the 4th amendment in a big way. But it's for our safety, so who needs rights as long as we're safe, right?

I agree on the potential issues, but is that enough to ban them now? VCRs aren't illegal even though they allow you do illeagal acts and Hollywood has deeper pockets than we'll ever have. My concern is that we'll have to hope that cooler heads prevail in situations like this, and I'd like a Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas, too, Santa.

Re: More speed/red light camera info

I wish more intersections had cameras. Was over by Fareway/Home Depot/HuHot in WDM/Clive tonight and a minivan turned left out of Fareway/Kohl's on red. They waited for a little break in the traffic, then just turned left.

Also, there are always people running the red lights by my place in WDM (by JCMall). I'm not talking about the light turns red when halfway through, I mean the light is red, the other drivers get the green and here comes a car through the red.

Because we're going to see if these cities still say that it's all about safety when the money isn't going into their accounts.

No matter what anyone tells you, it's about the money. Safety can come into play. I have friends in California who were complaining about this as well. Cameras are being put in for the safety. They hired an outside company to manage them. Then the city was barely breaking even or losing money some months, so they took them out. One of my friends wrote the mayor and said, "I thought this was about safety, not money." He hasn't received a reply yet.

New bill? The legislature isn't even in session. I also think this would violate home rule provisions of the iowa constitution.

Fron what I can find the proposal was submitted in june by the senator (when the legislature WAS in session) and didn't even come up for a vote. Good luck with that.

Re: More speed/red light camera info

If the city flips the bill for these cameras the revenue generated should stay with the city. I do not like this idea of transferring the money to the state coffers.

Also, it should be mandated that all revenue MUST go towards maintaining city roads while any revenue left over at the end of the year should be delivered back to the residents in the form of some type of credit towards city services.
