    NCAA Football Stats

I mentioned this the other day and just got it up on my site. I took a look at every NCAA team (for this I just show BCS teams) and ran numbers on football stats on a per possession basis. Most importantly points per possession but there's some other stuff in there too.

The defensive number of possessions should be exact but the offensive number of possessions could vary by as much as 1 poss per game played, but that is the worst possible case. The offensive number of possessions varying would obviously change the rest of the calculations.

The one thing currently not there that I hope to incorporate at some point is some component for evaluating an offense or a defense that includes the strength of offenses and defenses of the competition.

Anyway, check it out if you so desire.

    Re: NCAA Football Stats

Looks like we need a stanford offense and an Alabama defense....

Looks like Iowa defense is underachieving.....

Looks like Nebby is overachieving in the win column....

Looks like our offense is 1.72 pts per possession behind the league leader and our defense is only 0.91 pts per possession behind. Therefore, Mr. Stat, is not our defense better than our offense?

Looks like our offense has to have a lot of possessions and runs a lot of plays just to score an average number of points. My guess is first down has been dismal for most of our games.

As an aside, it would be interesting to look at league stats for penalties and (not apple) turnovers.

I think I can add a penalty component for next week pretty easily. Thanks.

I know this is only a piece of the analysis, but I looked at the plays/game line, and saw that eight of the top ten teams in plays per game come from the Big XII. It seems like tempo may be the defining quality of this conference these days, perhaps even more than stellar QB play.

Yes, and even more importantly, of the top 7 BCS teams in offensive possessions per game 5 of them are from the Big 12.

Also, I wrote this article with what you are talking about for WRNL last week:
