    Talent

We have the indoor practice facility, a decent stadium, decent attendance. That isn't enough to consistently draw top players to ISU.

Everyone says wait a few years until we have better talent. Help me understand how we are going to dramatically increase the talent in Ames, Iowa.

I am not down on Chizik, but wonder how long before we have a football team that can consistently win at least 7 games.

Was DMac unable to spot high school talent? Would we do better if we recruit the same players as the UNIs and MAC teams?

    Re: Talent

I guess since the coaching staff is not going to send us out on the road to talk to recruits, we should focus on what we can do for the team. Here's my suggestions:

    #1. Go to the games
    #2. Cheer like hell
#3. Support Iowa State, win or lose

And if that doesn't work, we could try to support our team, win or lose. And if they're still not doing well, we could try to support our team, win or lose. And if the season just isn't going the way we would like, we could alway trying supporting our team, win OR lose.

It really makes no difference what chizik does this year or next year or the year after that.

After the 2010 season their had better be a bowl game or else Mr Gene Chizik will be FIRED BY JAMIE POLLARD!!!!

    Boys thats the BOTTOM LINE!!!

    Re: Talent

Bottom line is we have enough talent to beat Kent State and UNI and Toledo. We just screwed up executing, as usual. Compare the stats from the first four games last year to the four games this year. You may be surprised. We eally miss a bombr runner like Koch. Can we get a power back for some tight situations. I think we are missing a piece opf the puzzle. UNL has same problem with Lucky. He is a weak runner straight ahead. Castille the power guy fumbles. Cody Glenn has continual injuries. Tale of Three Cities. Hawks, Clones, Huskers are missing parts to win. Hawks have more legitimate excuses than the other two teams.

    People Need to be Patient

Losing a game on 3 special team errors in the last 5 minutes is pretty unexcusable. The more talented team didn't win last night.

Football is one sport where a coach needs to recruit talent that fits his system. For that reason I feel it is unfair to judge GG until his kids start to play and have a chance to mature.

Can ISU recruit 4 or 5 star kids consistently? No
Can ISU recruit 2 & 3 star kids who can develop into All Big 12 performers? YES! It all comes down to GC's ability to identify and develop talent.

I know some people look at kids like Meyer, Blythe, Bass, Bowen, etc and see solid talent on this team. The key will be when All Big 12 teams are announced, how many OL & DL players from ISU are all conference- even honorable mention. My guess at this time is ZERO.

    Re: Talent

First you have to win games to receive awards. I do not think if we had any talent it will be recognized anyway if we lose more than 7 games. Heck, Nebraska had nobody listed two years ago when they play .500 ball. Acve is not making the bulk of tackles. Todd has a low per catch average. Our qb throws interceptions and pass interceptions. Shaggy misses a few. Bass stats at 4 yds a pop are easily topped by other teams. The blockers and rushers are not super duper. Allen Bell may be the closest to being a nominee at this point. Look for Texas, Oklahoma, Tech, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska players to get all the accolades. So we must not be playing for awards at this point. Allen Bell will get honorable mention, maybe Ace. That's it. Yet it is more about which teams win.

    Re: Talent

Technically, in my book at least, Chizik has yet to sign his first recruiting class. So after February of 2008, you have to at least let those kids be Juniors or redshirt Sophomores, which would make it the season of 2010, which is exactly what CyBobby said.

Also, there's more to learn about head coaching than just during the season. I'm sure Chizik and his staff realize mistakes they made every week in preparing the kids during game week and the offseason. With a young O-line, a returning RB, still a strong set of WR, a promising QB, Chizik being a defensive guy, and another year under everyone's belt, I think we'll see enormous improvement next year.

    Re: Talent

A couple things I took away from the game...

Ben Barkema has better hands than i thought, why we don't throw his way more often, and on deep routes like yesterday... i don't know. I also don't know who is going to play TE next year...maybe move Catlett back?

Chris Brown is good. He plays downhill and without abandon for his 170 pound body. He makes up for his small stature by using superior fundmentals, wrapping up, and driving through the ballcarrier. I think with him and James Smith, we may have two of the smallest safeties, but also two of the best in run support.

We can't run the ball down anybody's throat. Although Bass rushed for 143 yards, he did not even average 4 ypc. We need to keep the defense guessing run/pass, because our line isn't good enough to run it consistently when they know the run is coming.

Matt Purvis is not good, this was far from his first mistake, but definitely the most costly, and he is on scholarship. You don't realize how good a guy like Landon Schrage was until he's gone.

We have superior talent to teams like Kent St, UNI, and Toledo; yet we lack in experience and utilization of it, too many TOs and i'm not even getting started on our "special" special teams

    Re: Talent

    Look a rivals.com MAC talent:

Kent State has landed one two star.

Toledo has landed one no star.

Ball has landed no commits for 2008.

Iowa State has landed three three star and five two stars for 2008.

We will smash MAC next year.

    UNI has no 2008 commits.

SuperHawks have 6 three stars and four two stars including 5.1 40 OL James Ferrentz.

So, it does not look like they have more talent than us. They just execute better when less rivals talent is available. The fewer and lower commits for 2008 (which is typical every year for these 5 schools) the better they play. This is making me quesy.

    Re: Talent

many of purvis' snaps have been off, lucky for us Griebahn and Brandtner have made some good plays on the ball to prevent some mistakes. i know he also snapped it over the punter's head for a safety last year against the Longhorns

If we ranked snapper like teams, Sagarin would have him lower than #100 ranking.

We cannot afford inconsistency on a team like ours that is struggling.
