    Mistakes are killing this team

While I'm not thrilled with a lot of things happening this season, we are playing worse than the kind of team we are. Look at yesterday - we had 8 more first downs than Toledo, we had 100 more yards of total offense (Toledo, while being bad, isn't a bad offensive team and we held them under 300 yards of total offense) and they were only 4 of 12 on 3rd down. But look what happened:

    We had one interception
we had 2 lost fumbles (one leading directly to a score)
and we had the kickoff return for a touchdown

That's three turnovers, one kickoff return, which led directly to 2 touchdowns. The other fumble was a time when Toledo scored starting on their own 41. Everybody needs to do better in these games, but the players have got to start executing. This team is not overly talented - we have a very small window to make mistakes, and we keep making a ton of mistakes. Losing the turnover battle by a lot (3 to 1 again yesterday) and letting special teams really kill us. If these guys don't want to go 1-11 they really need to start executing well.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

I'm pretty encouraged by their overall play too. If you look at the statistics, this team could be 4-0. The defense has been better than expected. The offense is starting to grasp the new scheme. The turnaround on the offensive line has been nothing short of amazing. I think we'll surprise a few people, and be in some games that we are not expected to be in. But you're right, they don't have the ability to overcome huge mistakes and win. I disagree with all the people who say the talent is not there. It may not be what it will be in a few years, but we've got some really good kids. More than anything, they need to continue to add confidence in themselves, and in their new schemes. I believe the only game that will get pretty ugly will be the OU game.

I am not encouraged by a team that lost to friggin Kent State, UNI and Toledo. Name one team we can actually beat the rest of the year? Oklahoma will decide if 60 points is enough or if Stoops wants to try for a 3 digit win.

I'm encouraged by the team's performance, but save a miracle, there's no way they're going bowling this year. I think if they keep their heads in it, every game but Oklahoma is winnable, but it'll take a little something extra to go 5-3 in conference and get to that 6 win mark.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

I didn't listen to much of he game, because I can't stand John Walters play by play. So I wasn't aware of the turnovers. But here's what I decided. This staff has done a good job of teaching these guys how to play football, but they need to learn how to be winners. They left the field in the Iowa game with 1 second left on the clock and Iowa almost won the game, running the kickoff back. Last night they left the field with 5 minutes left on the clock and it cost them a W. Inexcusable! They had the momentum and an 11 point lead.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

The players made mistakes, no doubt. But as I've said in other posts last night, the coaching staff is not without blame. Toledo continuously took our return game away from us by kicking pop flies on kickoffs that we were forced to fair catch. We got the momentum by going up by 2 scores......why did we give them a chance to steal the momentum back? Especially when our special teams had been woeful anyway throughout the game?? Also, being that this is Chizik's first road game, the needed to do EVERYTHING they could to get that W.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

Good question for a very smart coaching staff. We love to shoot our foot off this year. What is the deal with Shaggy? He recently fans routinely on kickoffs. The previous kicker consistently only kicked to the 18. Are we that kickoff deficient?

Shaggy fanned on the last few kickoffs against Iowa. Does he need a bigger shoe or spectacles?

I suspect kickoffs will be a major weakness all year unless something drastic happens.
Maybe his leg is out of control if he runs up too far.

For our special teams kickoff return team to be good, we need to kick off popups or to the 5 line. Shaggy gets good height if he connects. The previous kicker hit some weak line drives. We need a kicker at Ames who can really do it. Nebraka learned the hard way last year with Gogdon who moved West.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

Sugar coat it all you want guys, they have lost to 3, yes 3 teams that should not be on the same field as a BCS school. We are just not good. The defense is not creating any turnovers, and the offense is averaging 3 turnovers a game.

Re: Mistakes are killing this team

I found it interesting that they moved the kickoffs back 5 yards but did not change the penalty for kicking it out of bounds. I think I would be very tempted to just kick it out of bounds every time and give the other team the ball on the 35.

I was thinking the same thing...kick it towards the corner and try to trap the returner on the sideline. If the kick goes OB, so be it. It would be interesting to see what the opponent's average starting field position is after kickoffs. I have a feeling it isn't that much better than the 35 yd line...

ISU shows 4 PK's on the roster. I'd think one of them should be able to consistently boot a deep kickoff...

Kyle, you are so right. If we cannot kick the ball to the 5 with consistentcy, pop it up for fair catch or kick it out. No brainer except for us: MISTAKES R US.

I thought we would see more turnovers by the other team this year since I expected harder defensive hitting. I was wrong. The amount of offensive turnovers is not enormous. We just never get the ball away forom the other team. Something needs to change - like hit the helmet on the ball, jump in front of the passes to gamble, gang tackle.

If you cannot kick to the 35, the other team can just take the penealty and make you rekick. That is why you don't see that employed at the end of games.

Mistakes or not that was Toledo's superbowl, we came out flat and beat ourselves. We should cancel the series with Toledo because we have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
