    Big NCAA Rule Changes

Some very big NCAA rule changes were just passed by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors:

    • Universities can now pay student-athletes an additional $2,000/year to fill in the gap between the amount of the athletic scholarship and the actual cost of attending college.

    • Universities can now offer multiyear scholarships instead of the old annual scholarship which must be renewed yearly.

    • Beginning in 2015, the 930 APR minimum will crucial for football and for other sports as those teams that don't achieve it will not be eligible for postseason (i.e., bowl games).

    • Beginning 2016, the minimum high school GPA on the GPA/ACT sliding scale for freshman eligibility will be raised from 2.00 to 2.30.

    • To prevent the 11th hour miracles that we're seeing now, high school students will be required to complete at least 10 of their 16 units of required core courses prior to their senior year.

    • The minimum transfer GPA for juco transfers will be raised from 2.00 to 2.50, plus the student will have to have completed a minimum amount of English, math and science courses.

This is the beginning of paying college players. I foresee a big legal battle coming when football players get this and the women's basketball team does not.

Only an idiot AD would give this to some men's teams and not to women's teams. If they do that, they deserve to be sued.

It will happen. There are a lot of stupid things people will do to improve their position in life professionally. A small school that doesn't have the money to pay everyone will have to make the decision of whether or not to pay all teams or just the ones bringing in the money.

They will probably have a fighting chance if they offset the men's football scholarships getting this benefits with an equal number of women's scholarships in whatever sports. That would be the way to handle it if you can't afford to do it for all scholarships offered by the school in all sports.
