Minor problem I hope the staff fixes with Barnett

He puts a ton of stress on the OL by how deep he drops on his passes. Gives the DE's better angles. That issue alone probably caused more pressure than anything on him Saturday than any poor blocking.
Otherwise I was very pleased with his poise. His reads in the run game made this offense click. Jantz could make plays, but I felt like sometimes he was guessing in the read run game and guessed wrong too much.

He does seem to take a fairly deep drop, but then he also seems to scoot back up as the ends come around.

while is drop is deep, he's also pretty adept at stepping up in the pocket and avoiding the rush

it also opened a lot of running lanes for him.

a 5-step drop, means take 5 steps back.
a 3-step drop, means take 3 steps back.

these are designed plays. it is not like he drops back until he feels like he should stop. getting the DE up field, allows for JB to step up in the pocket OR if the DE come from the inside, he rolls out.

no problems with his drop backs.

Pretty sure they are limiting "information overload". I thought the coaches did a great job of putting in a game plan that suited a first time starter. 300+ rushing yards was also huge.
I think Barnett has huge upside

He does take a pretty deep drop, maybe too much, but he does see the blitz coming fairly well and steps into the pocket to get protection. On the one huge sack he gave up Duck missed a block on a safety blitz after the fake handoff, and Barnett had no chance.

Does he drop deep to make up for being short? I was a linemen in high school, so I don't know how hard it is to see over/around the front 5.

Why do we need to worry about information overload? He's been in the system almost two years now. He seems like an intelligent guy. I'm more concerned about passing accuracy. If he can get more comfortable in the passing game (yeah I know about the drops) things may get interesting these last four games.

Maybe some of you should hold those fascists remarks. Wartknight is a coach, and and OL coach, so I'm pretty confident he know's what he's talking about.

That said, I do think he does step up well and has good pocket presence. But also, too deep does provide good angles for DE's to attack, but maybe that was the idea to open some running lanes.

Now I'm not an expert, but his throwing motion seems kind of long? But I'm not complaining because he did far better than 2uperman was doing.

I think his deep drops have to do with him being 6 feet tall. He needs a little more room to see over the line and be able to get rid of a pass without it being tipped

As long he wins, I leave it up to the coachs to decide if the need to tweek mechanics.

i think it helps him create bigger lanes for himself to run and see the field better... vick does the same thing.

Re: Minor problem I hope the staff fixes with Barnett

JB does have a deep drop, but you have to look at it as this; hes already 5 yards deep in the shotgun, no drop he takes will be a true 5 step or 3 step. 5 step is 3 step (drop back pass) and 3 step (quick game routes) is one drop step and throw. And, yes he is gaining too much ground on his last step of his drop in drop back settings, but has been great at avoiding the rush and sliding his feet to get up and out of the pocket.

Not everyone has the same stride. It is possible for him to only take the right amount of steps and still drop further than he should.
