Iowa State at Texas Tech: The Morning After

After the game last night, I found myself in a state of confusion. As an Iowa State fan, I had never been in a situation like that. When the game ends, I expect to feel a certain elation or disappointment, and last night I couldn't muster anything but utter disbelief. I watched some other games and highlight shows after the game ended, and every time the score came across the ESPN bottom line, all my friend and I could do is laugh.

My fandom began when I came to Iowa State as a student in the Fall of 2004, so all the events prior to that, i've experienced through the eyes of highlight tapes or listening to the experiences of older Cyclones than me. In the entire time I've been cheering for the Cyclones, I've never seen anything like what I saw last night. David Ubben, the Big 12 blogger for ESPN called it, "60 minutes of dominance." Can anyone recall an Iowa State performance that was even close to that? I certainly can't. Has anyone else found themselves in a state of similar confusion and disbelief?

All in all, it is one great day to be alive and be a Cyclone.

Green hills for thy throne, and for crown a golden melody/Ringing in the hearts of all who bring thee love and loyalty/Dear Alma Mater, make our spirits great

I think I'm still in shock. It's hard, as an Iowa State fan to watch a game against a decent opponent and know you have the game in hand. Even half way through the 4th quarter, in the back of my head, there was a little spot that said, "When is something going to go wrong." I knew at that point we had it wrapped, but still it was such and odd feeling watching that game.

Yeah as a long time cyclone fan, even with about 4 minutes left, I was still sitting there thinking "just hang on!" Seen way to much over the years haha

With that being said, that was far and away the most dominant performance I can ever remember (I dont tend to remember wins against some of those slack division 1-AA teams, so sorry if we've had some dominant wins against them that I don't remember)

It's really hard to believe in a way. I ate a huge chocolate muffin for breakfast and didn't even care.

It's pretty clear that Rhoads knows how to coach against TTubbs. That TTech team looked lost on both sides of the ball frankly.

Was nice to see that in the opponent

my phrase of the night was whenever the offense stepped onto the field: "get two first downs".

Yes, in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2005 we had 2-5 games fairly similar to last night. Usually the opponent was not ranked and on the road, but come on guys were not that bad of a program! Especially now with rhoads. He's proving we can beat some good teams when we least expected it.

Re: Iowa State at Texas Tech: The Morning After

The closet thing I can remember to anything this close, is when we dominated the Hawks 23-3 in 2005. If I remember they never entered the Red Zone, but overall domination I don't remember a game like this in 40 plus years of following Cyclone sports.

I was thinking about this game, and I didn't remember it being "domination" other than in terms of score. It was an upset for certain, but I checked out the stat sheets. Our offense was actually outgained in that game. Other than Iowa's 3 fumbles, that game was a lot closer than the score may have indicated. Still a great win though.

I guess to me, it was still a totally different feeling than last night, since the score was only 16-3 until nearly the end of the game. I felt really excited after that game, with the rivalry and everything. At the end of the TT game last night, I didn't feel that way. Hard to describe, really.

We've never done that to a ranked opponent in my fanhood, which goes back to 1995-1996ish.

We've bludgeoned conference foes before, but it was when they were clearly poor teams.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Re: Iowa State at Texas Tech: The Morning After

The entire game I was worried. I knew it was going to blow up in our faces and I knew were were going to choke, and the game would end up being close, even if we ended up winning. After White scored his TD in the 4th, I started smiling. That smile didn't stop until I went to sleep some 5 hours later. The closest I could come to describe the feeling I had was happy but it was also kind of relief... I've never seen anything like that. Tech should have destroyed us, and yet, it went the other way...

The moment that I thought we were totally safe was the Reeves INT. When he was running it back, I got the impression that they had totally given up and were barely trying to tackle him. Up until that point, I was a little leery due to their quick strike offense. But they looked like they had mailed it in after that pick.
