Vikings choose not to go for it on 4th down

Would you have decided to punt it to Aaron Rodgers or would have you gone for it with a 1-5 record?

I think that was a coaching mistake. Thoughts?

That is what I said in the other thread. It was moronic. You want to hope that you get the ball back and let your QB try again? Take a shot Jeesh the fans certainly won't fault you, there is only a couple of minutes left in the game.

Yea, no doubt. They were giving it up to the MVP of the league, same goes for Dallas last week when they decided to do 3 straight running plays and hand it back to Tom Brady with 2:27 seconds left.

You have to take chances in this league to win, and at a 1-5 record you don't have much else to lose!

Good point about the Dallas game last week. I remember thinking they had it wrapped up, but then it was 'what are you doing, you aren't playing the Redskins you're playing one of the best teams invthe league'

Re: Vikings choose not to go for it on 4th down

I would've gone, but I would've called a safe play on 3rd that could pick up 5 yards and put you in better position. You also have to factor in that the Packers weren't going to throw (although I wouldn't even hesitate to throw with Rodgers as accurate as he is) and they suck at running. Defense has to be able to stop the Packers running 3 consecutive plays.

I don't really care though this game showed the Vikings are not a sinking ship like they looked last week and that it isn't going to be a full rebuild. Especially with the top 2 CBs out against the best QB in the league.

Re: Vikings choose not to go for it on 4th down

I'm sure Frazier was thinking that we have all three of our timeouts and the 2-min warning to go. If GB really wants to score and put the game away, give them the longest field possible to do so. I too would have gone for it on 4th down, but if missed, Rodgers could easily sling it into the end zone.

Nonetheless, a good start to the Ponder era. Imagine how this game could have come out with all of our starters playing.

I don't really get that line of thinking. The Vikings have to hold the Packers to less than 2 first downs or they lose. Scoring isn't a factor. It doesn't matter if the Packers started on the Vikings 40 or their own 20. Two first downs=Packers win. So why worry about field position? Go for it on 4th and more importantly call plays like you are in 4 down territory.

It was the correct call with 3 time outs remaining. Defense had plenty of time and multiple chances to get the stop and the ball back and they failed.

Had they gone for it and not made it we'd be posting in a thread that reads "how stupid was it for the Vikings to not punt on 4th and 10 with 3 time outs left?"

The mistake was not running the ball on 1st or 2nd down there.

    If we punt:
    - Pack gets the ball.
    - LBs force a three-and-out or at least hold them back from two first downs.
    - Pack punts, we get it back with a chance to score and win.

    If we go for it:
    - Pack gets the ball.
    - LBs force a three-and-out or at least hold them back from two first downs (or a TD).
    - Pack kicks a field goal and there's officially no chance of winning.

This is so correct. And I'm a Packers fan. I was hoping the Vikes would go for it on 4th down, because I didn't think they would make it, and then the Packers would already be in FG range to put the game away.

It made me really nervous when the Vikes punted it, and they still had all 3 timeouts AND the two minute warning to work with. The Packers had something like 60 yds rushing all game total up to that point, and the Vikes had stopped them at least 2 times in a row, maybe 3.

The Vikings problem was that the Packers had as many rushing yards in their last drive, when everyone in the entire stadium knew they were going to run the ball, as they did the entire game up to that point. They even ran for 1st downs on 3rd and 5+ yds to go. GB didn't throw it even once in their final drive, and made 3 first downs. That was the ballgame... NOT the decision to punt it.

Re: Vikings choose not to go for it on 4th down

Even though I was for Green Bay, I question the call as well. You are a team that has won 1 game this year and going against what I would say the best offense in the NFL. Even though you knew GB would prolly run, I still don't think you take that chance as good as AR is. I think the situation is different if your a team is on the verge of making the playoff and a little more is on the line. And as someone stated earlier in the thread, who cares where GB gets the ball, you are already losing. I truely think the Vikings needed to be more aggressive in this cerain situation.
