Re: Future Cyclone Long to learn from Lucious

    Chris,

maybe I'm reading too much into this commitment and your writing of "PG of the future", but does this mean that Sledge figures to be more of a combo-guard?

I figured that people would think that and that's why I wrote "potential" point guard of the future. Sledge is still very much in the equation but he'll likely play this season. Sledge could be the PG of the present you know? We'll all just have to see how it plays out.

Well, we do need a scholarship from someone.

ok I got ya. No reason we can't have two capable PGs I guess...

This is correct but that was the situation last year at this time too remember?

DeMarcus Phillips took care of that. With Iowa State's track record, it's hard to believe a scenario in which it doesn't work itself out.

Thanks for the clarification. Wasn't sure if you have heard from sources that Tavon may not be suited for the task. I know that we shouldn't expect too much from him this year, but maybe the staff was seeing something that tells them they need another PG.

For the record, I love the contrast of the small-fast option vs. the longer, pass-first steady option that Long is characterized to be.

Connecting dots. Non-existent scholarship goes to PG...

I know it's coming from someone and that's my guess. If a big was leaving I'd assume the non-existent scholarship would have gone to a big.

This is just a guess, of course. I don't think Fred is winging it in a "work itself out" manner. He has a good idea who won't be back.

That's why I'm looking at this as good news but possibly really bad news if it means Royce is only here one season.

I think the only way Royce leaves after 1 season is if we either win the big 12 (season or tournament), or make a deep run in the NCAA. He sounds like he's here to win championships and if he doesn't get that in year one then he'll probably be back at least one more year.

Of course he is going to say things like that but how often do players follow through on that type of talk?

My bets would be Railey or White not being here next year, both for vastly different reasons.
