Keys to a Cyclone Victory in Toledo

Just posted my Keys to Game on my blog and there a couple key things that will have a huge impact on the outcome of the game. If we are able to deliver on these keys ISU fans will be trying to contain our optimism heading into Lincoln, while if not we may be scratching our heads wondering where we go from here. The Glass Bowl in Toledo has not been friendly to opposing teams 38-5 in last 43 games. Take a look at my Keys to a Cyclone Victory and let me know your comments. Go Cyclones!!

Since they are a yound defense hungry for the rush, I would screen pass early. I would cut back against the defense with Bass. I would pump fake to Blythe/Hamilton and then throw long. Hey, Bret, let's see a pump fake or two.

One of the keys was scoring touchdowns to finish drives and I was looking at Blythes numbers and even projecting the first three games of the year, he would be within 3 catches of his sophomore which was his biggest at ISU. Big difference is yards per catch. Look at the change during his career

    Freshman 21.4
    Sophomore 19.6
    Junior 14.2
    Senior 10.8 (thru three games)

Part of getting TD's is stretching to endzone with Todd when we get inside 35 yard line. Hopefully we will see that Saturday.

The biggest key to the game is not turning the ball over. The Cyclones made it way too easy for Kent State and UNI. The Hawks showed up expecting to be given the ball inside the red zone at least a couple times.

I have a gut feeling ISU comes out in the first half and scares Cyclone Nation that we are heading back to the Kent St. & UNI type of performance and go into half losing surprisingly, but Chizik turns his guys around in the 2nd half and we win big!

Turnovers are the big thing in any game, I think we need to see our defense get a little more opportunistic...we are getting MUCH better on 3rd downs and forcing punts, now I think we need to see some guys force some fumbles and step in front of some underthrown balls.

Or catch the ints that are thrown to us. We have missed on a couple interceptions this year that could been. We need a couple huge +turnover margin games just to get back to even on the year.

If we come out and are losing at half time I don't like our chances in the second half as they will be sky high with momentum and emotion. However, with Chiziks even keel perhaps we would be better able to withstand that. I don't want to find out though.

I know is yr/catch is going down, but how is his total yards/game doing?

Agreed... I don't think Chizik has had a chance to really engrain level headedness into this team yet... we're still very much subject to swings in momentum, emotions, ect. I fear that if we slip behind it will be very difficult to come back - lets face it our team is kinda used to losing at this point, especially on the road

Plus Chizik said he hadn't figured out yet how to keep the team's head out of the clouds yet after beating Iowa, so if they go in too cocky and high off of last week, then start to struggle, it could end poorly for us

(though I'm hoping they'll still be a bit cocky and it will be enough to motivate them to open up a can of whoop @$$ on Toledo today! )

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State,

Re: Keys to a Cyclone Victory in Toledo

sure would be nice to retrieve some turnovers and establish a solid running game. which will allow our defense to rest and maybe open some stuff down field. their defense isn't supposed to be that great (but well see if heard that before), so we should be able to do some good things offensively against this team. definitely need a good start, i want a little of that cockiness showing we can play with anyone other than just iowa. if we fall behind early we could revisit the toledo or uni games.

Two favorite teams, the Cyclones, and whoever is playing the Hawkeyes!
