I've been saying for a long time that we need to crack down on foreign competitors to our meth labs. How are they supposed to compete with that?

Re: International Meth Ring Bust in Marshalltown

Can't remember if it is Freakonomics or Super Freakonomics but one of the books has the study about drug use and how the war on drugs has failed. Their suggestion is to not go after the supplies but to go after the user. Because if we cut off demand then the will be no need for the supply. They suggested severely stiffer penalties for users and possession than what we currently have.

Every time I see a drug bust like this now I just think about how the user is going to find some other means to get his/her fix. Don’t get me wrong these people should be punished, however, I don’t think this fixes the problem, it just moves the problem somewhere else.

Wouldn’t it have been better if they would have followed these people to the distribution point and arrested the users? If we take them off the street at the same time, this would help reduce crime, and save lives and hopefully money in the long run.

Re: International Meth Ring Bust in Marshalltown

I thought that I heard on one of the DM stations that 90% of the meth in Iowa comes from outside the state. Either we don't produce as much as I thought we did or people are using meth way more than I thought.

"According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 16.7 million Americans age 12 or older use marijuana. Another 760,000 people use MDMA (ecstasy), 730,000 Americans use meth, and 1.6 million use cocaine."

The United States has a Federal prison population of over 2.5 million persons. Just over half of those are in Federal prison due to drug related offenses. The Federal Government spends over $15 Billion a year on the 'War on Drugs'.

Somehow, I don't think that there's enough police power to roundup all the drug users in this country (much less drug distributors). Nor is there anywhere near the amount of space required to house the offenders.

I think the key is, you don't have to catch of the people that use. If the punishment was severe enough it would likely reduce the number of users. Also there are other ways of punishing people than putting them in jail. Considering most drug use doesn't harm others, a hefty fine could be enough.

Also does stopping the supply of drugs from one point, in this case Marshalltown, stop the use of drugs which is ultimatly the war that the war on drug is supposed to be fighting. Sometime we need to think outside of doing things the same way all the time. Think about all the money that has been used in the war on drugs. Do those number indicate to you that we are winning the war?

Either that or legalize it and tax the crap out of it.

WTF, is "pure meth?" Seems a little odd to call meth pure.

Different grades, just like pot. Pure meth, as I understand it, is much more addictive and much stronger because it has fewer chemical impurities. Depends on the cooking method.

And no, I don't use drugs, I just watch TV.
