ESPN puts out ISU season preview

Seems pretty fair. After their analysis, I copied the conclusion to the article below.

Blue Ribbon 2011-12 college basketball preview -- Iowa State Cyclones - ESPN

It would be surprising if Iowa State finished at the bottom of the Big 12 again this season. Unlike last year, the Cyclones are decidedly not the least talented team in the conference. Actually, their combination of size, talent and experience is as good as at least half the teams in the league.

The only issue is, these guys are coming from all over the place -- high school, junior colleges, other D-I schools, returning players -- and they have never played together as a unit.
The good news is the Cyclones again play a soft non-conference schedule, so they have a chance to work through some of those potential chemistry issues before the new meat-grinder Big 12 schedule begins Jan. 4 against Texas.

At a quick glance, Iowa State has a better roster than Oklahoma, Texas Tech and possibly Kansas State.

It would be a big leap from last season, but there is no reason the Cyclones shouldn't be thinking about the NCAA Tournament. It isn't unusual for the Big 12 to send five or six teams to the Dance, and Iowa State has a chance to finish in the middle of the pack.

That is going to require a lot of gelling in interesting new ways. As they say, there is a reason junior college players go to junior colleges, and there is a reason transfer players transfer, and those reasons often don't go away. But for the first time in a long time at Iowa State, the talent is there. It is simply a matter of putting it together.

Nothing too in depth there, but it is a fair anaylsis. Iowa State definitely has the talent to finish in the upper middle of the Big 12, and possibly sneak into the dance. I have no doubt they will have some gelling issues early on, but fortunately the non-conference slate is pretty soft, and they should be able to fix any issues by the time conference play starts. I could easily see them winning 20 games this year.

I think we'll need either 22 or 23 wins to make the tourney with the non-con schedule...

I don't really understand how they can spend the entire article talking about how much depth and how many options we have and then give us a C for bench/depth

Agree. With our non-conference schedule we probably need to be at least 0.500 in conference to have a shot at the tournament.

Seemed like a fair evaluation to me. The final grades seemed a bit low but given the number of unknowns I guess that's OK. Hoops kickoff is getting real close; can't wait to see these guys !!!!!!!

Also discussed having several "traditional" big men, but gave frontcourt a C-minus.

I can totally understand what has become a blanket-hesitation when analyzing this team few of them have played together in actual MBB competition; those who are returners played on a .500 team; the player with the most stud-potential has never played at the college level.

That's probably why the Depth category got a C. To Iowa State fans, "grades" like this sound pessimistic because we've gotten used to almost zero depth and extreme roster chaos. We're more likely to think, "No proof this is a dangerous team, but hard to imagine it can't be a better situation than the last 5 years or so."

    That's what I thought too.

Also this blurb from CFH answers the question about if White would bring the ball up or just be the point forward in half court sets.

"I think Chris Allen can put the ball in his hands some," Hoiberg said. "Royce White is as good a ball handler at his size as I've seen. You can play some unique lineups with the personnel we have this year. I'm not afraid to play a little different and have the forward bring the ball up the floor and run some different sets with that.

Well, if they are considering "C" as "average in the Big 12", then it doesn't look too bad.

If they consider "C" as "practically a failure" like I did in high school and college (with the exception of graduating senior semester -- when "D" stood for "Diploma"), then it looks terrible.

I've been buying the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook for quite a few years running now. What was posted is just a few snippets from the whole preview. Blue Ribbon is by far and away the most detailed guide out there when it comes to college basketball.

There is a very interesting and illuminating part of the preview that mentions how much different this year's team looks compared to the McDermott teams. I don't have the guide with me now to transcribe it, but I will post it when I get the chance.

Lets hope a couple teams we beat in the NC turn out to be pretty darn good.....otherwise we'll need to go 10-8 in the Big 12 to get to the dance.

10-8 in this league will get in unless we have some really bad losses in non-con

If we went 11-1 non-con and 10-8 in this league (21-9 overall), we should get in

If we went 11-1 non-con and 9-9 in the league (20-10 overall), I agree it might be tough

There's always Kansas City too! Wouldn't it be great to actually play more than one day in the Big 12 Tournament again
