They were talking about this on the SVP show. According to them, all the animals had been rounded up except for a bear, mountain lion, and a monkey. They were taking bets on which would be the last one to get caught.

Van Peezy's money was on the monkey.

If by "rounded up" they meant "put down" by the local law enforcement, than yes. Very sickening story and this seems to have been one twisted individual. For the record, I'm not blaming the law enforcement for killing the escaped animals, they probably had little choice given the situation. The blame all falls on the owner and perhaps on the state of Ohio for having close to zero regulations on the keeping of dangerous exotic animals.

Of course, they were shot dead. Could have been tranquilized and transported elsewhere.

Except there were over 50 of them, and I highly doubt the law enforcement had the necessary equipment to tranquilize and transport all of them.

Sad story, but how the hell does the state allow somebody to accumulate exotic animals like that?

With my one track mind, I would see exotic and ignore the other words and automatically expect to see herds of strippers running through corn fields and ditches.

It was night. Tranquilizing wasn't logistically possible.

Director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Jack Hanna — known to television audiences for his appearances on programs for the past three decades — said during a Wednesday news conference with authorities that the sheriff was correct to issue the shoot-to-kill order

"It's very difficult. Tranquilizing an animal in a proper situation is hard, much less right now — they're out of their confinement, it's new to them."
Even when one 300-pound animal was shot with a tranquilizer dart when animal authorities arrived, the animal "went crazy," ran off and had to be shot, Lutz said.

I have seen first hand what some animals will do once hit with a tranquilizer until the drugs take affect. If it is in close proximity to people it could be much safer to shoot them. With the size of some of these animals the tranquilizer would take awhile to set in and all bets are off as to what could happen during that time frame.

Maybe it is just because I am used to the Iowa State Patrol uniforms but when I saw the video of the cop all I could think of was "fat guy in a little hat" to paraphrase Chris Farley in Tommy Boy.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

Yea on the news all the zoo officials came out and said that they absolutely had to shoot the animals in that nighttime situation. They seemed hopeful that once it was daylight they might be able to tranquilize some instead, but you have to put safety first. I'm sure PETA will have a field day with it though.

Takes a large deal of expertise to tranquilize also. Under or over dosing can make the situation worse.

Re: Some A Hole releases 50+ dangerous wild animals into the city and then kills him

I have mixed feelings about the shoot to kill order. You have to realize that many predators in a small area could lead to them acting desperately. Listening to the sheriff, he sounds like he just didn't want them to get too far away. Not sure how much I agree with that attitude, but you do have to consider that the farther away they get the more time will pass before capture and the more likely there will be a negative human interaction.

It is a shame they had to killed though. I'm not a tree huger by any stretch of the imagination, but I respect God's creation and it is sad when an animal has to be killed for reasons other than food- even if it is for the best.
