    Camera memory card help

i have a canon powershot d10. i have a 8gb memory card. earlier in the week i had maxed out all 8gigs. so i got on the computer, backed up all of those photos and videos and then deleted them from the memory card. there are zero photos and videos on the card now. i go to take a photo today and it says "memory card full" on the camera screen and cannot take a photo now.

what gives? it is like this memory card was a one and done memory card that cannot be reused.

help? am i an idiot. on my desktop under the icon it says 7.46GB 4.2MB free. this also doesn't make any sense as there is nothing on the card. there are 3 folders on the card, none of which have any files in them.

    Re: Camera memory card help

Put the card into the camera, and then turn the camera on. In the menu there should be an option to 'Format' the card. This should take care of it.

    Re: Camera memory card help

    got it, thanks.

that was odd though, as i used the camera all weekend without having to reformat the card. but then once the camera was full, i couldn't take any more photos after the originals were deleted. oh well, it works now again.

    followup question:

in the event this happens again in the future, does reformatting the card delete existing photos? say i am in another state at some sort of epic event and my camera says "memory card full" even though it really isn't (again), reformatting will let me take more photos, but with the existing photos be deleted or inaccessible?

    thanks

For all practical purposes they will be gone.

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.

    Re: Camera memory card help

Yea, they'd be gone. It might be worth buying a backup card, or trying to transfer the photos off the card more often rather than letting them build up to 8gb.
