If you want to neuter the Big East

Wouldn't you take West Virginia, Louisville & Boise St. If Boise St. can't go to the Big East I think they are in real trouble and can't keep their BCS bid.

Plus when you have thrown in TCU t the mix, the Big 12 might have imroved their inventory of football games for the next TV contracts.

Re: If you want to neuter the Big East

I'd be just fine with Boise joining the Big East.

I don't really care one way or another about killing the Big East, I just think the best pool of realistic additions to the Big 12 are 3 Big East schools. I'm not rooting for the end of that league, but in the words of Ivan Drago, "if he dies, he dies".

I think the goal is to do what's best for us as a conference, not deplete another conference for the purpose of depleting another conference.

I think they need WVU AND BSU. Lose them both and they have no team that has consistently been near the top ten.

If WVU leaves, or BSU is part of the MWC/CUSA title game. Either MWC/CUSA gets a bid or Big East loses theirs. You can't say that the new Big East deserves a BCS bid and the winner of MWC/CUSA doesn't.

I don't want to destroy the Big East, I just want the Big 12 to stay in the picture long term. It just so happens that at least one Big East school is probably needed to do that. I love BYU as a Big 12 team, but BYU alone and a ten team league is a long term death sentence for us. We need to move to 12 now with 1/3 of our old conference defected. Big East is the only way to do that in a strong way.

Just WVU and Louisville would neuter that conference. I'd like to take them and BYU. That's a great conference, from an ISU standpoint.

Re: If you want to neuter the Big East

To what end? What possible advantage is there to hurting the Big East? If anything that helps drive to the super conference scenario we've been looking at that scares everyone so much. I have absolutely zero interest in seeing the Big East have any issues regarding viability.

My first choice as well. I was happy with TCU too as long as they came with other significant additions like this.

If BYU balks, and they'd be stupid to balk when we've already given them the two biggest concessions, Cincy is fine.

Re: If you want to neuter the Big East

If we take two more Big East teams, Boise St. should have trouble realistically agreeing to go to the Big East. It would be a terrible haul for a team going to a conference on life support.

I hope that "nuetering the Big East" isn't the goal of the conference expansion process.

In ideal my scenario, the Big 12 adds 2-3 Big East teams just because I want the Big 12 to thrive and be a force long term.

I'd also like the Big East to regroup and keep its BCS bid. I'd also like MWC/CUSA to get a BCS bid. If they all have bids people will be more likely to demand an actual playoff. Big East bid without an MWC bid has been unfair for many years now.

People wouldn't give a crap if MWC/CUSA and Big East teams got an 8 seed or 16 seed in a playoff. They do care if they get a 1:1 post season reward with the Pac 12 and Big Ten champ because that is not fair at all.

If Mizzou leaves, the B12 will only add one school for now to replace Mizzou according to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News who was just on ESPN Austin Radio. The B12 TV partners will not increase their payouts for 12 schools. By going to 12 schools, the revenue hit for existing schools would be at least $3M/yr and the Presidents/ADs will not go for that.

What's the purpose/benefit of "neutering" the Big East? Did it get the MAC pregnant?

I think the goal is to do what's best for ISU. Fewer schools = more money.

Exactly. Its not like the big east is some longstanding historical conference. The whole thing was only founded 30 years ago. Its only even had football for 20 years. Of its remaining football members, you have:

Uconn, which has only been playing FBS football for 10 years, only as a big east member since 04.
Rutgers and WVA- only in the conference since 91
Cincy, USF, and Louisville- Only in the conference since 2005.

If we take WVU, Louisville, and one other (say Cincy or USF), we'd be leaving 3 schools from that conference with a combined big east football history of 35 years, most of which would be Rutgers's 20 years, the rest coming from Uconn's 7 years and then 6 from the other remainder. Even if you only take WVU and Louisville, youre still looking at a combined time of BE football play of about 40 years.

I dont think our specific goal should be to kill any conferences. At the same time, we should be looking out for our own best interests, and if that happens to result in the death of the bcs conference with the least history both between its conference members and as a conference (and its a conference that's already been put on life support by the ACC grabbing Pitt\Syracuse), then that's better than most of the realignment moves that've already happened (breaking up 100-year traditions)
