    Not optimistic they get a deal done. The owners have come down from their demands a lot but the players won't budge enough.

    Why? The owners OWN the teams, if they want to pay their employees less that should be their right. If the NBA players think they can find alternative employment making as much money as they do, good luck.

    The players will buckle, they have too a little. The owners have no incentive to have the season start if they are going to lose money.

    Bill Simmons had a good write-up on this in his Grantland column yesterday. Reports I've seen have made it sound like it was mainly Garnett that yelled at the owners while Kobe and Pierce were just disinterested in listening altogether. Simmons also pointed out that the combined years spent in college between those three guys was approximately three years, all of which by Pierce at KU. Nice work Billy Hunter.

    Both sides are idiots in this situation and it's ******* me off.

    You know by November, the bills will start piling up for some of these guys and then people become much more conciliatory. Find a way to keep the guaranteed contract, but make small market teams more competetive economically and get owners to stop paying stupid money to players that do not deserve it!

    The difference between the two lockouts this year is that the NBA players HAVE options. Sure, European and Asian leagues would pay most of the NBA players less, but the NBA players aren't expecting equal pay - they're expecting ENOUGH pay to survive the owners' attempt to break the union. Yes, $1 million isn't nearly what most of the NBA players are making in the NBA, but it's certainly enough to survive the lockout and force the owners to come their way.

    The NFL owners had significantly more power over their players. Their players had very few options outside of the NFL, which means if they wanted to resume playing in the NFL they had to come the owners' way.

    Yes, in theory, the since the owners own the team they should have all the power. But that power doesn't mean a whole lot and it's not as simple as saying "take reduced contracts" when the NBA's best players, as well as the lesser players, have the option to take lesser contracts to play for overseas clubs and have shown an overwhelming willingness to take less money to force the owners to come their way. And replacement players aren't the answer either. This whole lockout is about the owners "supposed" inability to make money with the best players playing in front of filled arenas. You think the owners are going to make any more money with scabs playing in empty houses? I really doubt it.

    Do I think the vast majority of NBA players are overpaid? Certainly. By why should they be punished when it's the owners' inability to control their own spending that has caused this crisis? Why should the owners demand that the players save them from themselves? How about the owners try being disciplined enough not to play bench players $10 million/year first before insist the entire league take a mandatory salary cut?

    The NBA's current system is terrible for small market teams. I don't know what the answer is, but this is a good analysis

    -The owners keep making the same mistakes and can't protect themselves from their worst enemies...themselves.
    -The mid-level players feel that they're worth the money they're making.
    -The agents keep the conflict going by working both sides.
    -The league refuses to acknowledge that middle class families can't afford to go to games and that Charlotte and New Orleans have no business having a franchise.
    -The league also refuses to acknowledge that they aren't the NFL.

    The entire situation is effed and there's no end in sight. Just a complete shame.
