Post Passing defense numbers cause concern at ISU

    DesMoinesRegister.com

Ames, Ia. – Since the beginning of last season, quarterbacks have enjoyed a
higher completion rate against Iowa State than any other team in major college football.

The Cyclones have allowed opponents to connect on 71.5 percent of their passes over the last 15 games, which may be an ominous statistic heading into Saturday’s trip to Toledo.

“Anytime you’re talking completion percentage, you want that number to be as low as possible,” secondary coach Jeff Koonz said. “Our guys are very proud, and they’re taking it on to lower that stat.”

Toledo (0-3) traditionally creates mismatches by using spread formations. That could be trouble for Iowa State (1-2), which has already been hit with injuries.

Caleb Berg, a projected starter at safety, has not played this season. Chris Brown, a former cornerback, has gone from third-stringer to a key contributor.

“Right now, all hands are on deck,” Koonz said.

The Cyclones’ depleted secondary will have to contend with a Rockets offense that features eight receivers or running backs who have caught at least three passes.

“We go out there and have fun, throw the ball around,” quarterback Aaron Opelt said. “Just try to keep the defense off balance a little bit.”

What is this seasons comp. % taking last year out of the equation? 67% still pretty high but down from the average they used and 6% down from last year. I like the trend we have seen so far and think it will continue. I just don't like the article using last years numbers plus this years when it involves two completely different staffs.

It was really a messed up article. As I put in my write up, we are 22nd in passing yards allowed and 59th in pass efficiency defense (exactly average).

Re: Passing defense numbers cause concern at ISU

Keep in mind that last year, at least, our defensive strategy was to allow short passes, make the tackle, and not give up the deep ball. Clearly that strategy did not work well, but it does allow for a higher completion percentage against us.

I agree this is still a problem and we need to get it down, but this should be taken into consideration.
