    Thanks again, Jamie Pollard...

...for bringing us Paul Rhoads and Fred Hoiberg.

It's hard, perhaps impossible, to think of better choices for Iowa State.

JP made a great hire with PR.

We need to thank Fred Hoiberg for Fred Hoiberg. Thankfully Fred was persistent enough to convince JP to hire him after Pollard thought McD was the better choice the first time. Damn near killed the program.

One of the most comical things on this site is watching the Pollard haters (who will inevitably find this thread) at work. We would be so hosed with Van De Velde right now.

Let's not forget about Coach Jackson. Who in time will have the wrestling team back on top.

    Re: Thanks again, Jamie Pollard...

Pollard's track record for hiring and maintaing coaches have been excellent.

    1) Hired Chizik (a big deal at the time). Later Auburn wanted him and he won a national title (like it or not).
    2) Hired Rhoads (many people questioned this).
    3) Hired Hoiberg (many people questioned this).
    4) Lifetime contract for Fennelly.
    5) Kept Johnson-Lynch.

The 800 lb gorilla in the room is McDermott which we all know was a giant, terrible fail.

Quite a few ADs would not have hired Fred.

With the hopeless situation we were in after GMac, who could we get to even interview for the job? Fred saved our butts and JP would have been ran out of town if he hadn't hired him.

    +1

I have not agreed with every decision that JP has made, but I don't have to. The important thing is that he has led this AD in the right direction. After BVDV, that was critical.

What can I say that is short and concise that would be the exact opposite of just sayin...."This."?

The McDermott hire wasnt a bad hire, per se. You're taking a risk with any hire, and a guy who has just brought a team (that had only had 1 other NCAA appearance since 1980) to 3 straight tourney appearances is about as good of a bet as you're going to be able to make. You dont always win even what appears to be a great hand though, and its clear that we didnt with McD.

The biggest fail with McDermott was the contract that basically made it impossible to fire him without paying a huge settlement. And a big part of that as i recall was the circumstances mcdermott walked into created by the Morgan era, giving him an automatic extension.

Most ADs wouldve hired a guy with no coaching experience? Doubtful. That took some guts to make that call.
