    JP made a great hire with PR.

    We need to thank Fred Hoiberg for Fred Hoiberg. Thankfully Fred was persistent enough to convince JP to hire him after Pollard thought McD was the better choice the first time. Damn near killed the program.


    Clone to the Bone with the up and coming IOWA STATE.

    Pollard's track record for hiring and maintaing coaches have been excellent.

    1) Hired Chizik (a big deal at the time). Later Auburn wanted him and he won a national title (like it or not).
    2) Hired Rhoads (many people questioned this).
    3) Hired Hoiberg (many people questioned this).
    4) Lifetime contract for Fennelly.
    5) Kept Johnson-Lynch.

    The 800 lb gorilla in the room is McDermott which we all know was a giant, terrible fail.

    That is very tough to judge. In the situation JP was in at the time he hired Fred...I think most ADs would have hired Fred. That said...hard to say either way...

    With the hopeless situation we were in after GMac, who could we get to even interview for the job? Fred saved our butts and JP would have been ran out of town if he hadn't hired him.

    I have not agreed with every decision that JP has made, but I don't have to. The important thing is that he has led this AD in the right direction. After BVDV, that was critical.

    The McDermott hire wasnt a bad hire, per se. You're taking a risk with any hire, and a guy who has just brought a team (that had only had 1 other NCAA appearance since 1980) to 3 straight tourney appearances is about as good of a bet as you're going to be able to make. You dont always win even what appears to be a great hand though, and its clear that we didnt with McD.

    The biggest fail with McDermott was the contract that basically made it impossible to fire him without paying a huge settlement. And a big part of that as i recall was the circumstances mcdermott walked into created by the Morgan era, giving him an automatic extension.

    Most ADs wouldve hired a guy with no coaching experience? Doubtful. That took some guts to make that call.
