    Best way to get there?

How are most people driving from Ames to Columbia?

Our group is debating between going down 163 to 63, or taking I35 down close to KC, then jutting over to I70 for the rest of the way. We figure the 163-63 route is the least distance, but we could drive faster on the interstates. Is 63 2 lane most of the way?

Thanks, hope to see a lot of you guys down there.

Highway 63 in Missouri is double lane from Kirksville to Columbia. I believe it is single lane between Ottumwa and Kirksville.

Go on 163-63. Time in and time out I can get there faster. From Des Moines it's 1 hour 30 minutes to Ottumwa and about 2 hour and 15 min from there. It will take you 20-30 minutes longer the other way.

With gas prices why not take the way shorter way even if its only 10 minutes longer.

There's a Denny's as well. Have to go there. It's an American institution!

Yeah don't go through KC to 70. Traffic is much worse plus it's longer. Only good thing about it, is the speed limit is 70 and it's 65 the other way. (I think)

    Flatbranch is good.

You also have to hit up Tropical Liqueurs for an awesome frozen adult beverage.

Re: Best way to get there?

If you take 63, watch out for Amish people (I'm not kidding). Other than that, and the stretch of one-lane road, it's a pretty easy drive.

Re: Best way to get there?

My inlaws live 20 miles east of Columbia and I always go 163. There is about sixty miles of two way traffic between Ottumwa and Kirksville. If your driving down Saturday morning there is a good Amish bakery a couple of miles west of Bloomfield you might want to stop at. From Bloomfield to about ten miles into Missouri is Amish country. They do have their own lane to drive their buggies in but I have seen them on the highway.

Re: Best way to get there?

We took 163-63 in '05, and it was mostly 4 lane, and WAY shorter. I think that's the way I'm going down this weekend, but that's up to the idiot piloting the vehicle, and not me.

    You're right.

Looks like 65 will be the way to go.

This is why my Droid told me not to take 63 today.
