    "Herky the Turkey"

Little story to laugh with me on:
Saturday I was with my family grilling out at home watching the game. I have a nephew whose dad has essentially left him, and I often act as his male role model.

After a few "football pops" I start coaching the boys(my wife and i have a couple of young boys as well) on the finer details of Cy-hawk Rivalry etc. One of the things I taught them was a chant that went "Herky the Turkey, Hurky the Turkey" and on and on it went. This was a ton of fun with three little boys under the age of 4!

I get a call from my sister this morning that as she was walking my nephew into day care there was a little girl walking into day care at the same time and was clearly suffering from the neglect of poor parenting as she was wearing a shirt that had Herky on the front. Well my nephew sees this and says "hey your shirt has Herky the Turkey on it! Icky!" She says "he isn't a turkey" and my nephew replies "yes my uncle says he is!"

    Awesome!

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

    Re: "Herky the Turkey"

My 7 year old nephew is a Hawkeye. He was brainwashed from birth on from his dad and mother. Although after stopping by last night I think there is a chance to bring him to the good side. He loved my throwback jersey and wanted one, but dad says no way. He said he wants to go to an ISU game if I come to the next home Iowa game. (By the way... Anyone have an old Indiana shirt)

I think there is a chance... He even called me after the game Sat and asked if the game was fun and its ok that the Cyclones win.

Anytime my 3 year old daughter sees the tigerhawk emblem, she says, "Hawkeyes are gross. We like Cy."

    Gotta get 'em young.

A bunch of the ladies as my 3 year old son's daycare are trying to brainwash all of the kids there into saying Go Hawkeyes. My boy was the only one to stay strong!

He was quoted as saying "Go Cyclones....and the Cubs and Bears too!

Makes a father proud, kinda brings a tear to your eye.

I'd say you need to find a new daycare dude. I'm still considering getting out of the teaching business and starting up Cyclone Sports Academy and Daycare.

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

It would have been better had he stopped after "Go Cyclones..." That second part could very well trigger a call to Child Protective Services...I can hear the call now...

Yeah, I'm thinking being raised "hawkeye" is blatantly child abuse.

I am very amused! I would take my kids out of there so fast or I would send them in ISU gear everyday for the rest of their time there.

Teach your kids the fight song and have them do it for show and tell. Or have them teach all of the other kids!

Sounds like your nephew might like the throwback jersey as a Christmas gift.

    Re: "Herky the Turkey"

Take your kids to games. Take photos, buy 'em stuff at the game. Spoil 'em rotten when in Ames.

Send them to daycare/school with the photos, ISU garb, stories, etc. Make sure they remind every kid in daycare/school that they went to an ISU football game with their mom/dad. Make sure they boast about it, how much fun they had. The tailgate, playing games, throwing the football around, watching Dad get drunk and fall into a puddle.

Make sure they tell their friends they should go to.

And if you can do it, round up a couple of your kids best friends and take them to a game as well.

    Spread the love...Cyclone love.

    Re: "Herky the Turkey"

I take my 2 1/2 yr old jogging with me quite a bit in her stroller. Every time she sees a Cyclone emblem or flag or basketball pole wrapper arounder(sorry don't know official name), etc, she says "Iowa Date cool" (don't quite have her s's down yet). Anytime she sees EIU symbols she says " Ewwwwuuuuuuuu nasty", which coincadentally she also says when most often Dad or one of her sisters , BUT NEVER HER MOTHER, passes gas at home. I guess I can see the correlation between the two.

    Re: "Herky the Turkey"

We were tailgating at the game on Saturday and when the band mad it's way down the center isle, my 7 year old son and 4 or 5 of his friends (all around the same age) went over to watch them. As the band marched along, they were saying "Oh we hate the Hawkeyes, whoop, whoop." (you all know how it goes). After they went by, my son and his friends made their way back to our location chanting and clapping "Oh we hate the Hawkeyes, whoop, whoop."

BTW, I remember doing the exact same thing in the early 80's when I was that age.

I had my boy taught that "the team in the yellow pants sucks". Glad he has forgotten that with our new uni's.
