    Computer Repair Scams

Good undercover report on the first video below. I've always said if I ever have a problem finding job I'm just going to start my own business up and undercut GeekSquad. First off I diagnose stuff like this as part of my job, but if I didn't I think I'd by a new PC before I ever took it to them if you see what someone like GeekSquad charges for things. The problem they created in the 1st video is something that even someone with minimal PC experience should catch right away which eventually they did find a place that plugged the cable back in and said no charge because it was so simple.

For example, GeekSquad charges $159 to come to your house and install a piece of hardware such as a hard drive, video card, or CD-ROM. Chances are that hardware part cost a fraction of that install charge. For instance you can get a CD burner for about $12 if you shope around and all you have to do is connect 2 cables and run an install disc. I couldn't sleep at night knowing it cost someone $159 for me to spend maybe 5-10 minutes to install that.

And they might be peeping toms on top of it:

"Hey, the Geeksquad guy is here!" "OK, I'll go ahead and jump in the shower now."

Listen, I don't agree with what the guy allegedly did, but, seriously, who hops in the shower while you have any kind of repairmen at your house? Maybe I'm misunderstanding this, but, there is a whole lot of odd going on with that.

I'm not trying to make light of the incident, but that just sounds funny.

$159? Jeez, my current PC was only $400. No use fixing them anymore, just buy a new one.

Yeah well just check out their pricing list! Services – In-home, In-Office, Phone and Online Computer Help - Geek Squad. Use Us

$249 for "Advanced Diagnostic With Repair" (diagnostic, cleaning, virus/spyware removal, OS repair, optimization, software updates)

So that probably means they run AdAware, run your virus scanner, clear you cache and temp files through windows and run Windows update I bet. You are already halfway to a new PC there!!! For another $100 it will get you 2 software title installs too! $149 for them to come to your home to install Microsoft Office but that does not include the cost of the actual software which is about the same ammount for the Standard edition. $59 if you bring your PC to the store. Hell I'd feel like I just ripped you off if I charged you $25 to install MS Office!

No, he left the cell phone there and left, then it videotaped her and he came back to get it from what I can tell.

Computer Support = Brake Jobs, imo. Once you do a brake job yourself, you end up asking yourself, "WTF was I paying some mechanic to do this?"

I know a place that charges $400 to replace disks and calipers.

    Re: Computer Repair Scams

Geek Squad is pretty worthless. My girlfriend's sorority had them come out to fix an issue with their computer lab, and charged them 50 bucks. They came and went saying it'd been fixed, when the next person to use the lab still had issues with it. They wanted another 50 bucks to come out and fix it again.

Oh I hear you on this one! I replaced the front break pads and rotors on my last car about a month before I sold it (had to if I wanted to sell it because the rotors were warped) and cost me about $80 in NAPA parts and a case of beer to the friend that replaced them in about 30 minutes.
