Re: ISU Professor Awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Shechtman's discovery in 1982 fundamentally changed the way chemists look at solid matter. It initially faced strong objections from the scientific community, and even got him kicked out of his research group.
the prize committee is really on the ball

He will receive the 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award along with the other Nobel Prize winners at a Dec. 10 ceremony in Stockholm.

Most Nobel prizes are awarded for research that was first conducted years ago. The full long-term impact of research is obviously not recognized until long after it has been conducted.

Re: ISU Professor Awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry

this year features the rare occurrence that an award is given to someone who is dead. Normally if they award the prize and the person dies before they can accept it, no one gets it- there is no second place. ...they also don't award the prize to a dead person, so I wil have to read up on what's going on with that dude.

Weird, there's no mention of it in ISU website and according to CNN he's a professor at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology.
