Keep EIGHT teams?!? pros and cons

    Let's think about this:

With Missouri (almost), A&M, Colorado and Nebraska gone, we have:

    1. Iowa State
    2. Kansas
    3. Kansas State
    4. Baylor
    5. Tech
    6. Texas
    7. Oklahoma
    8. Oklahoma State

Keep it the same. Do not add any more. The advantage = more revenue for Iowa State with equal revenue sharing.

Let's talk in terms of wins for Iowa State:

We will get FOUR non conference games at least, meaning we have a better chance of going 4-0 to start conference games. During the conference games, we can stay competitive with Kansas/Kansas State/Baylor/Tech/Okie State of the world. I see Big 8 as a win win situation for Iowa State.

Question for the group. With Big 8, do we add a 5th non conference game?

I like the general idea of this, but then we'll have seven next year, what happens then? Without adding teams and TV markets, we are just a feed lot for the larger conferences. Plus, we are going to hear constant griping of how we don't have to go through the same challenges of the larger conferences. Even though, if they get to 16, they'd be playing essentially the same schedule. Not having a championship game is going to hurt us in the long run.

I highly doubt we will lose teams, expecially with Texas and Oklahoma giving up their unequal revenue sharing.

Re: Keep EIGHT teams - Big 8 could be better!

It'll hurt TV contracts, since the championship game is a big revenue-producer for these non-profit institutions.

If Mizzou leaves and we stick at 8, this thing is done for. The TV money will really suffer without the Missouri markets. The perception of instability would likely finally finish this thing off, and we just move on to the scramble for an actual home.

Staying at 8 is nothing but disaster if we get to 8.

Won't happen this way. Inventory of conference games goes way down. Value of TV contracts goes way down. No more revenue and maybe less revenue.

Didn't Big East have 8 schools? How did they survive?

An 8 team league is a joke see the Big East. You would have 5 non-con games and with that you could have teams with a 1-6 conference records make it to a bowl. Loosing MU doesn't hurt texas or OU but it does hurt KU,KSU, and ISU.

Even at 8 football schools, the Big East is playing with bigger profiles and markets than the states of Kansas and Iowa.

The Big East had that additional help of their extra-large and competitive basketball conference. Our 8 would just be the same # of basketball schools, with only Kansas as a big-time nationally-known draw.

Re: Keep EIGHT teams - Big 8 could be better!

I posted this in another thread but will put it here as well and why I think the Big 12 needs to get back to at least 10 if not 12 members again.

Honest question, but how would ISU or anyone not named Texas be making a ton of money in an 8 team conference?

The billion dollar Fox deal (or whatever it was) would be voided, there is no way when the ABC/ESPN contract comes due that it gets renegotiated for anything close to what it currently is at (so there is another paycut) since the conference will have 4 less members from the original contract.

Sure there are less pieces to split the pie into but at the same time in the long run there will also be less money to split.

When the Big Ten, SEC and ACC go to 9 game conference schedules like the PAC 12 currently they are the ones that are going to reap the rewards from ABC/ESPN because they have more inventory to show (108 conference games in a 12 team league and 126 conference games in a 14 team league) compared to the Big 12 that will have 56 conference games.

That is why the Big Ten has said starting in 2017 they will move to a 9 game conference schedule because their tv contract with ABC/ESPN is up after 2015 and this gives them more inventory to bring to the table and demand more money.

The revenue would go wayyyyy down. Where is the game inventory for networks to pick up?

Or better yet, the Big 2. ISU and Texas with ALL revenue and donations split 50/50. I could go with a Big 3 as well. ISU, Notre Dame, and Texas
