    Question LB Recruit Question

I was reviewing our prospects for 2008. Is anyone concerned about the fact we are not getting a lot of action on LBs. Banks and Bowen are gone after this year. Carper might be too. We have some backups, but after this year there is really not the depth that you might want as a DC.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

I have noticed the lack of commits for the last two months. Looks like we will have to go juco big time again this year.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

Unfortunately, I agree. We will probably still have to top 10-12 jucos, but if we get Ellington back, and maybe one or two others. We could probably survive without Juco LBs. Not to say there aren't some goods ones on the list that it would be nice to have on the team.

Maybe I am being too optimistic about laying the groundwork for certain athletes.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

I don't see too big of a problem with LB's. Mostly it will just be inexpierence next year. 4 Sophs. and 3 fresh. at the position, with most of the Sophs. seeing the field one way or another this year. Throw in Bibbs and we should be ok next year and the years to come. I also assume that moving Means to FB the coaches most likely knew they would be ok with depth in the future.

I Don't Think We Need a JUCO at LB

It seems to me there are already some decent LB's on the roster that are getting PT this year:

    Michael Bibbs
    Jesse Smith
    Fred Garrin

Add to that fresh like: Cameron Bell, Anthony Green, Curtiz Mathis and sophs: Kris Means, Josh Raven, Derec Schmidgall.

A JUCO who projects to start right away could add depth or push a starter, but I don't see a glaring weakness at LB next year.

I'm pretty sure Carper is done. I might have misunderstood but it sounded like Gene said Carper had to make a decision to quit playing football to prevent long term knee problems. It sounds like he is helping the coaches out and career wise might want to be a coach.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

You make a valid point on the freshman group and obviously Jesse Smith has proven himself a worthy player. I guess it's not so bad. After reading that list and thinking about the depth we have at other positions, it's not as scary as I once thought.

I think they did a good job at working through the high school and juco ranks last year and created some well rounded position depth. It should be an interesting recruiting season after the football season ends. Right now, I should probably just focus on watching the boys play, before I have to wait another 9 months.

I question Jesse Smith speed. I think coach wants more speed if possible.

Schmidgal is getting a lot of playing time.

My wife is from Clarinda, and to my knowledge, Carper is still on the fence. If I understand correctly, he would really like to come back and play, but they're still not sure he'll be able to.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

I hope he can. Carper is in my logistics class and still walks with a heavy limp, its really too bad. But if anybody can come back from his injury, I guess it would be him.

Cameron Bell is a beast. He was moved to linebacker after crushed and put Ace Bowen on his rear on an iso play. Dangerous combo of size and speed.

Derec Schmidgall, Bibbs, Garrin, and Raven have all been playing very a lot of meaningful football as well. Throw in Curtiz Mathis and some other new recruits and I think we will be fine at LB, with a lot more size.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

Do they want Cameron to play on the outside? Also, Means was moved to FB. Garrin and Raven really need to put on a lot of weight imo to do what the coaches want them to.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

It's a good thread BooneCy, we have been fortunate the last few years with our linebackers, Dobbins comes to mind, Ace is special and will be missed but I am hoping Josh Raven can fill the position.

I hope to see the same thing. Ace's exposion and play making ability is going to be missed even if the other guys can make the routine plays. Raven was a sack machine in high school as a DE. He is even small for OLB. I'm hoping that he will develope into a playmaker if his instincts can make up for his size.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

Tyrone McKenzie, now with Coach Dan, did well also. Nebraska currently is befuddled on what to do with their linebackers. Cosgrove is the linebacker coach.

    Re: LB Recruit Question

For the record. A kid named Russell Ellington who commited to us and then decommited might recommit to us. He is a receiver in high school but he is projected as a linebacker in college. So that might awnser some of your questions.
