Traffic Safety Checkpoint Scheduled for Sept 21

Received this via e-mail, forwarded from a co-worker...

Windsor Heights, IOWA --- The Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force in conjunction with the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau, Windsor Heights, Clive and Urbandale police departments and other area state, county, and local law enforcement agencies plan to conduct a traffic safety checkpoint on Friday, September 21, 2007. The checkpoint will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m., and run through 3:00 a.m., Saturday, September 22, 2007. It will be conducted on Hickman Road, U.S. Highway 6, between the 8000 and 7400 blocks for eastbound traffic. Eastbound traffic in this area will be narrowed to one lane and motorists are urged to exercise special care while driving in this area. Uniformed officers, official vehicles and adequate warning signs will be on display in the area to inform motorists of the impending intrusion.

Captain Dennis McDaniel of the Windsor Heights Police Department and current chairman of the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF) advises that, “The purpose of this checkpoint is to reinforce our efforts as law enforcement officers that the message about traffic safety is getting out to the public. Often, police officers are viewed solely from an enforcement standpoint. This checkpoint is as much about education as it is enforcement. We plan to have a variety of resources on hand for motorists, including educational materials.” The timing of this checkpoint coincides with the wrap-up of National Child Passenger Safety Week and the recently concluded national media campaign from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest. “Our hope is to spread the word that every occupant in a vehicle is responsible for traffic safety. If you do your part as motorists, and we do our part as law enforcement officials, together we can make Iowa roadways a safer place to travel,” said McDaniel.

Traffic safety checkpoints are legal in Iowa. Those vehicles that are stopped can expect to be investigated by officers to determine whether licensing, registration, and vehicle inspection requirements are being observed. Additionally, other general matters related to highway safety will be addressed. Not every vehicle that passes through the checkpoint will be stopped. There will be a previously determined ratio on which vehicles will be stopped. For example, check point personnel may choose to check one out of every ten cars. Additionally, any obvious signs of unlawful behavior will be addressed.

For additional comment, contact CITSTF chairman, Captain Dennis McDaniel at the Windsor Heights Police Department, (515) 277-4453. There will be a pre-event roll call at Clive PD at 7:00PM that media is welcome to attend. Media is also welcome at the event. Please coordinate these appearances with Captain McDaniel prior to September 21st.

you know, if they wanted to catch law breakers, why announce it ahead of time? If I was about and about in that area, knowing this was taking place, i'd stay away from that area.

Ummm ... if they're announcing it before hand, I'd call it more of a Stupidity Tax than a fund drive!

Exactly, just like the stop-light cameras on Hickman were installed for "safety" reasons.

I thought I heard Waukee got sued or was going to get sued, hence why they stopped using them. Not the case?

Ohh come on you guys! It is about our government making sure we are safe. They are our leaders, they are better than us. They are just thinking of the children, there is no other motive! You are all to cynical.

The city doing it was Clive. It was a policeman from Waukee, who got a ticket, who challenged it. He felt the cameras were wrong.

When I roar thru traffic lights now, I alway check ahead at intersections for the cameras. Just one more thing to control and decide: the wheel, the cell phone, the satellite radio channel, the moonroof, the mirrors, the cigs, and now the cameras. Driving now days is like being a qb with onrushing linemen. You must decide fast.

Heard half the cameras are fake anyway. Like those Iraqui tanks. Anyone get a picture ticket yet?

if that is what they are doing... maybe they should put one up about 1.5 hours East?

I'm always more careful around those intersections now so hope I never will. I was wondering though when I was driving my new car around before I got the plates if I did run a light what could they do other than send the ticket to Karl's Chevrolet since that was my plates. LOL
