I think we are seeing Paul Rhoads' biggest weakness

I have said this a couple of times already, but I think it is worth its own thread. Paul Rhoads likes to stress playing with emotion as a way to make up for lack of athletic ability when playing against better teams. Making mistakes and getting lots of penalties is a natural result of playing with emotion. For this reason, I think mistakes and penalties will always be a problem with this team for as long as Paul Rhoads is coaching here.

It's not like it's a problem only Iowa State has. Football is a game of emotion and ego, guys are going to talk smack and act a thug

Re: I think we are seeing Paul Rhoads' biggest weakness

Ummmm... hasn't he been quoted multiple times saying something like 'It's never as bad as it seems, and it's never as good as it seems... you always want to play on an even keel'. To say he likes to stress playing with emotion is flat out wrong. Furthermore, to say he stresses that particularly when we are playing more athletic teams and that that is the reason for the mistakes we've seen this year implies that UNI and Connecticut and Iowa are all also more athletic than us. That, too, is flat out wrong.

Wow we really do live in a world of what have you done for me lately ! I will take Rhoads as a coach Here ! It was what it was an ugly game with terrible bad luck ... He will pick them up and have them ready they aren't broken ...May need a new offensive line as not sure if any of them are 100% but thats part of the game .As a fan I was emotional last night too. I think I used every one of my emotions at one point or another.

Re: I think we are seeing Paul Rhoads' biggest weakness

I think this game in particular is simple to explain. this is Texas, the **** of the walk and a lot of these players have a big chip on their shoulder because none of them were recruited by UT. They want to shove it down UT's throat and let the know about it. I knew this would happen before the game started, I was just hoping I would be wrong.

Re: I think we are seeing Paul Rhoads' biggest weakness

I think it's obvious that discipline is a real problem for this team. Maybe some posters have worried too much, maybe not, but it really isn't out of line to question anything about the stunning lack of discipline that this team continues to exhibit.

We got away with it three times, we didn't get away with it yesterday. It probably would be good to get a handle on it before we burn ourselves again.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Re: I think we are seeing Paul Rhoads' biggest weakness

What LJ did last night was way beyond stupid, and I agree that this team needs to play with emotion but be able to turn it off when the whistle blows. I watched a lot of games yesterday and I saw several team that had someone do something equally as stupid as LJ. I think this game is a good learning tool for this team. They barely escaped in the first three games after playing sloppy, this time they lost, so they have now experienced the real cost of their mistakes.

You were not complaining when that emotion won games for ISU. I think we should just give up and not try when we are facing teams that are assumed to have more talent and athletic ability.

+100. Iowa State has some blue collar players, but it's not a blue collar team as Rhoads likes to think. Blue collar is work hard and keep your mouth shut. Too many Cyclones have a big problem with that second part. The team is whatever it is and nothing is the end of the world. But it's not a blue collar team. Rhoads is lying to himself if he thinks it is.
