    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

Yep, it was called correctly. Once that ball was tipped, he was free game.

Kirby also flattened a Texas guy at the end of the play.

    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

The better question -- why wasn't it called earlier in the game?

    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

So, at least theoretically, if a guy came through untouched could he tackle the punter before he kicks it? Or does he have to get the ball?

Exactly, the 1st quarter he fell on the ground after a Texas player hit him. Happened right in front of me and no one called it. Terrible.

Yep, you can tackle him in that case. He's no different than a running back while he has possession of the ball.

and running into the kicker should've been called on the first one (I think) but it wouldn't have changed the outcome.

He's not protected until he kicks it. Until he does, he is just a ball carrier.

"Hit" is a bit extreme. He basically lost his balance as the player came toward him, and then fell onto the guy. Good no-call there.

The Texas player fell into Kirby after he had punted the ball. Should have been a call.

Watch a replay -- definitely not true. The only possible defense is that he was (maybe) pushed into Kirby -- but even if so, he was pushed by another Texas player.

Nice pirouette/acting by Kirby to inflate the contact -- but it was totaly contact that Kirby couldn't really avoid.

I only saw it once, so I'm going off memory, but if the Texas player touched him, it was certainly not in a way that would have knocked him off his feet. Kirby was turned sideways, and the UT player rolled up by his feet, very close to his feet, may even have touched his leg, but Kirby fell because he couldn't put his feet back into a balanced posture (because the Texas player was there). That's just my take on it.

It was running into the kicker and it was three Texas guys runing into each otehr and rolling into Kirby. By definition it is running into the kicker

    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

I can't remember was it the guy who blocked the punt that ran into him, or someone else? doesn't really matter, but I was just curious.

The guy coming from Kirby's left blocked the kick and the guy coming from his right blew him up.

    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

Does anyone know for sure what the rule is on that? Can only the person who blocks the kick hit the punter? I know it doesn't matter and the game was decided anyway, but I'd just like to know for future reference.

Also, another rules question, is there still a running into the punter penalty? I seem to remember they got rid of it and only had the 15 yarder. Kind of like how they got rid of the "incidental" face mask penalty. I could be wrong about that though.

    Re: Iowa State's Punt Coverage

Back to the OP's question, it seems to me like it's a "safe" return. There will be times where our punt return unit will go all out for a block, and other times where they'll go all out for a return and only send one or two guys for the block. In the "safe" look it's more of, send some guys back to help the returner, and a few into the backfield but they wait until they know for sure that the ball will be kicked to keep the punting team honest. If we rush for a block or drop for a super return everytime, it opens us up to having a fake run against us. I've noticed more teams this year and last running safe looks against us, because of the successful fake punts we had in '09 and '10.
