    Career Fair Woes

So this happened to a couple friends and I with a few different companies. We all had really good and long talks with recruiters with our respective companies. They hinted hard that they would call that night for an interview the next day (Interview Day for the Career Fair).

4 of us had this situation and none of us got a call.

Did this happen to anyone else this year or in the past? Did they end up calling you a couple weeks later?

We're all just kinda bummed about it at the moment.

I had pretty solid summer work lined up either back home or with professor's at ISU the whole time I was in school, so the only time I was talking to recruiters at the career fair pushing hard for interviews and not just for networking was fall of my senior year. That year I had 3 or 4 interviews, can't remember, but only one was an on-campus interview that they set up the same day as the career fair. The rest were all calls I got days or weeks later. I wouldn't completely give up hope unless you were straight up told they were only doing interviews the next day.

    Re: Career Fair Woes

Depends on what companies you talked to. Lots of companies do interviews the very next day, some might schedule an on campus interview later in October(if they're in the surrounding area), some might call and schedule a phone or on-site interview a couple weeks or even months down the line. Every company is different, it's a good, non-invasive question to ask when you can expect to hear from them about the matter(whether positive or negative).

Most companies I've gotten interviews with have done them the very next day, or scheduled on campus interviews a couple of weeks down the line, but I usually just ask them when I can expect to hear from them so I know what their schedule is.

I'm assuming you got cards from all these guys. You should just call them if you're nervous about it. It might even remind them about you and put you back into the mix.

    Re: Career Fair Woes

I met with several companies (both yesterday and at Meet the Firm on Tuesday), and only one wanted to set up and interview for today. They actually called/texted me about half an hour after I'd talked to them at the Career Fair.

I wouldn't get too worried. I'm guessing most companies are going to be scheduling for on-campus interviews in October.

    Re: Career Fair Woes

Follow up on them and keep in contact. Go out to the company website and see if the position you are interested in is available to apply for.

I got an 2 internships and my current job due to what that career fair. The job I currently have I had no idea that I was going to get an interview when I left and was floored when I got a call. I also had a few years where I went in and people would hardly talk to me. Came away from those years feeling like it was a massive waste of time. Get on ISUCMS and apply too for on campus interviews.

    Re: Career Fair Woes

First off, I've been a recruiter at the ISU career fair and at Meet the Firms and my wife still is, so I have a little perspective to offer.

The career fair is about companies introducing themselves to potential hires as much as it is about students finding jobs. They have to be positive and act interested because that's the image of themselves they want to project.

If I was a poor candidate for a position and the recruiter from Company X shot me down on the spot, I might go tell my friends who are better candidates not to waste their time with Company X. On the other hand, if Company X looks like they're hiring and they're interested in me, I might go tell my better qualified friends to go check out Company X. Staying positive and acting interested in the candidates drives traffic their way.

The reality is that the recruiters talk to hundreds of people. Unless you really stand out (positively or negatively), most people end up as just another resume in the pile. The best piece of advice I can offer is to get good grades and make sure your resume is in good shape. If you have those things going for you and you don't totally blow it when you talk to the recruiter in person, you'll have a good chance of getting an interview.

And don't sweat it, it's noon on the day after the career fair and the recruiters have lots of calls to make to get their interviews lined up. Like someone else said, some companies won't be doing interviews immediately so they may not call right away.

I've gotten a co-op and a job from the ISU career fair, so I can attest that it works.
Try and contact that employer, but don't be too pushy. Just tell them that you would love to have the chance to join their "team."

It could be anything. The recruiters for the most part are going to be positive about you while you are there talking with them. The most interviews come from applying on the CMS website. I may have gotten one or two interviews from the actual career fair, but I got 16 first round interviews my senior year by applying online. Some were on the typical day after career fair on campus interview time, some were later on campus, and some were at the site of the company.

Basically, don't sweat it at the career fair. Unless you're extremely impressive, you're just there to get your name in the hat. After having 16 interviews in my last two semesters, I only ended up with 1 job offer. Maybe that says something about me lol, but I did have a job lined up at graduation and it started from the CMS website, not the career fair.
