    Jose Reyes=chicken bleep

I've always thought the guy was a gamer and liked the way he played, but any respect I had for him went out the door today. He lays down a bunt single in the bottom of the 1st, then has himself lifted for a pinch runner. He bumped his b.a. up to .337 and Braun will have to get 3 hits in no more than 4 at bats to pass him.

All this on the 70th anniversary of Ted Williams refusing to sit and going 6 for 8 in a double header to seal up .400. Absolute bush league.

    Re: Jose Reyes=chicken bleep

The Madison TV station this morning said Braun was considering sitting out today.

Was this because he thought Reyes would have to go 2 for 4 to win the title and he had a better chance sitting vs. winning it at the plate?

    Re: Jose Reyes=chicken bleep

I don't have a problem with the bunt single. That's actually part of the game. But it was bush league to pull himself out after that. It would have been hilarious if Braun had gone 3 for 4. Play to win, don't play not to lose (especially if you suck at math, Jose).

Well Reyes knows that soon no one will remember him pulling himself out of the game and they will just remember that he won the batting title. I'm not going to burn a guy at the stake for trying to win the batting title in a game that otherwise was completely meaningless.

No one is going to remember this? You mean like how no one remembers Ted Williams refusing to sit out the final day of the season when he already had a .400 average? Not to mention that yesterday was the 70th anniversary of Williams' fateful decision. The juxtaposition alone is going to have people remembering this for a long time.

Braun is in the playoffs and Reyes is not. Game. Set. Match.

Agreed. He's labelled himself. Not sure whether the label reads "Cares about personal stats too much," or "Not very good at math" (since Braun could have passed him much) or both.

Incidentally, Griffey tried this, too, but was so gregarious everyone eventually gave him a pass (or because he got burned in trying) . I don't think Reyes is that popular.

Wasn't that actually Ken Griffey, Sr., though? I'm not old enough to have seen him play, but I can't imagine that he was as popular as Junior (very few players in history were/are).

Don't like it. What's the point of winning the batting title if no one is going to respect you for it?

A very few people might remember it for awhile but you are giving the sporting public too much credit. Batting title shenanigans have been occurring for the past 100 years. Pitchers leave late season starts early to protect ERA crowns. The title reflects the entire body of work not just the last game.

Can anybody tell me what the circumstances were surrounding the 1976 AL batting title? Very controversial at the time.

I can't beleive this is an issue. They guy did outhit Braun for the entire season.
It's not like he went 3/7 in the first two games and then shut it down with 160 games left.

    Re: Jose Reyes=chicken bleep

Didn't David Robinson have his teammates feed him for 72 points on the final day of the regular season so he could claim the scoring crown for that season?

No one ever seems to bring that up in this day and age and Robinson was a much larger figure in sports, I don't see Reyes getting much backlash at all.
