One thing missing this year . . .

No trick special teams plays -- yet. No fake field goals, punts, or extra points (unless I missed it -- I didn't see/hear all of UNI). No unexpected onside kicks.

(Of course, the Lenz wide receiver pass was awesome.)

May my posts be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.)

One thing I have been waiting for is a reverse/fake reverse on a kickoff. However, with teams kicking directionally to cut off half the field for either SJ or Lenz, I doubt it happens.

Going forward, we probably won't have as many as we did last year. Other teams will be expecting it, especially the onside kicks.

Re: One thing missing this year . . .

As far as Rhoads coaches, I don't consider some WR passes as trickery. If those don't work, you typically line up on the next down.

We will see more of the real trickery though. What I love about Rhoads is that against NU, TTU, and UT he broke out some high stakes trickery in the 2nd qtr, long before he was in a situation that he needed to. Fake punt, fake FG, and onside kick. Those calls took some stones at that point of the game to keep ISU's momentum.

Paul seems to be smart and calculated about the risk though. If it blows up in your face in the 2nd qtr, you have another 30+ minutes to make up for it.

On special teams, except for Field Goals, I think we've been doing well enough to not need the trickery. We've been getting great returns and have a solid punting game.

We might want to try some Fake Field Goals though, can't hurt our percentage much.

Re: One thing missing this year . . .

I thought the comment that Rhoads was "unloading the chamber" after the onside kick last year against Texas was very appropriate. You're up 14-0, conventional wisdom says kick, Texas anticipated that but Rhoads knew they left the line early and knew you don't get Texas on the ropes like we had them very often.

If for some unbeknownst reason we open up another two score lead on them on Saturday I could see a fake field goal being busted out.

What I like (so far) about the trick plays w/ Rhoads it isn't a prominent part of the "concept," but happens every once in a while. Game plan isn't designed to pull out all the stops, but isn't completely vanilla.

It brought us the Lenz pass, for example, which paid dividends. Then there was the fake punt vs. NU in '09 (followed by the Tiller-wing-it play), onside kick vs. UT in '10, onside attempt vs. Iowa in '10 (backfired in context of that game, but certainly wasn't expected) and fake-extra point vs. Nebraska in '10 (probably not as good a risk as trying to get to FG range in regulation, but still gutsy).

I like the idea of being a team that might, just might, do something unexpected, but normally plays close to the vest.

You forgot the fake field goal against UNI last season with the holder and Mahoney running the option.

Mahoney might be the best kicker at the onside kick. He was kicking them perfectly all the way back to Chizik's last year.

Why would anyone expect a sneak on 4th and 6..? Maybe on 4th and 1 this would work (On another note.. since when does " mean yards?)

Actually, I'm pretty sure he threw that ball away, because the receiver wasn't wide open. He was a QB in high school, I believe.

6"= 6 inches. I think he means 4th and inches.

Edit: Your smiley face may indicate some sarcasm there.....
