    Conference Openers

ISU hasn't won game 1 of the conference season since 2002. ISU has never beat a ranked opponent in a conference opener....until this week?

good write up again. lots of interesting statistics.

ok, i'll say it, is there any statistic you can find that looks REALLY GOOD on the history of iowa state football? we haven't had much success in the past, but that doesn't have to effect what happens this saturday.

    just a thought

Did Baylor ever beat Iowa State in Ames? Maybe that's the best stat for us?

That's kind of the depressing thing, at times, there aren't a lot of historical positives for things like this.

    I didnt realize that stat.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised since we have 1 winning season in Big 12 history.

That 2004 game against Oklahoma State was in Stillwater, not Ames.

    Yup, you're right. Thanks!

It would then be the year prior with opening up conference play against a "south" team at home when Oklahoma beat ISU 53-7

If I remember correctly, it was their first conference road win in the Big 12.

Memories of Greg Coleman fumbling the ball into the north end zone just came flooding back into my mind...

In fact...I am fairly certain he did it twice in that game!

If someone has a pic of that fumble it would be nice. Sitting in the student section, I swore that he had crossed the plane.

    ESPN recap:

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Baylor finally got to celebrate in a Big 12 stadium other than its own.
The once-bumbling Bears are winless on the road no more.
Baylor won a Big 12 road game for the first time in the league's 10-year history on Saturday, getting three field goals from Ryan Havens and two big fumble recoveries to beat Iowa State 23-13.
"It's another gorilla off our back," Baylor coach Guy Morriss said.
And a huge setback for Iowa State, now 0-2 in the Big 12 after sharing the North title last year. The league's North Division already had been ridiculed as being the league's weak link. The division's co-champion losing to Baylor will only add to that perception.
"I can't even express in words how disappointed we are in this loss," Iowa State defensive end Jason Berryman said. "We didn't play Cyclone football like we know how."
Baylor had been 0-37 on the road in the Big 12 and had lost 38 straight conference games overall away from home. The Bears' last league victory on the road had been on Nov. 11, 1995 -- 48-7 over SMU in the old Southwest Conference.
The Bears (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) almost ended their skid a week ago, losing at Texas A&M 16-13 in overtime.
"We're playing well on the road and that's something we haven't done in a long time," Baylor quarterback Shawn Bell said. "People need to give us credit for that, because we're becoming road warriors and that's the biggest problem we've had in the past."
Baylor took the lead for good at 16-13 on Havens' 36-yard field goal with 12:19 left. A junior who had never kicked a field goal or extra point in college before this year, he connected earlier from 49 and 21 yards.
Iowa State (3-2, 0-2) led 13-10 at halftime but was doomed by two costly fumbles in the second half. Baylor followed the second fumble with a 12-play, 81-yard drive for the game-clinching touchdown, a 1-yard run by Paul Mosley with 1:36 left.
When it was over, the Bears acted as if they had done this before. While a couple of managers hugged on the sideline, the players and coaches shook hands with their Iowa State counterparts, then walked calmly up the incline to their dressing room.
But make no mistake, this was a major step for a program that had come in 6-67 in all Big 12 games.
"It seems like this might legitimize us as a football team and program," Morriss said. "We played pretty good last week, I felt like. We didn't play as well this week, but we came up here on the road and won the game. I don't think we'll be able to sneak up on anybody anymore."
What might have been the game's biggest play came in the third quarter with Iowa State leading by three and in position to take control. The Cyclones' Greg Coleman was hit at the Baylor 1-yard line and fumbled into the end zone, where the Bears' Maurice Lane recovered for a touchback.
The play was reviewed to make sure Coleman's knee wasn't down and the call stood.
"Some say I was down, some say I wasn't," Coleman said. "I can't say. I have to hold on to the football."
After an exchange of punts, Willie Andrews' 15-yard return gave Baylor the ball at the Iowa State 35. Five plays later, Havens kicked a 21-yard field goal to tie it at 13. The fumble had done its damage.
"It was a very big play," Lane said. "They had momentum and our offense was struggling, so having that play gave our offense some confidence."
Iowa State responded to Havens' go-ahead field goal with another drive, marching from its 20 to a first down at the Baylor 25. But R.J. Sumrall fumbled after catching a 6-yard pass from Bret Meyer and Josh Bell recovered for Baylor at the 19.
The Bears then drove to their game-clinching touchdown, helped by Bell's 16-yard run on third-and-14 from his 31 and a later personal foul on Iowa State. Once Mosley squirted into the end zone, Iowa State fans began filing out of the stadium.
"We did a lot of good things today," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "But when we needed to be the best on the last drive of the game, we were not."
Iowa State outgained Baylor 320-276, but three of the Bears' scoring drives started in ISU territory. Andrews was a big reason for that. Along with his 15-yarder, he set Baylor up with punt returns of 16 and 29 yards.
Andrews also set the tone for Baylor early, sacking Meyer for a 7-yard loss on the game's second play. Iowa State went three-and-out, Andrews returned the punt 16 yards to the Iowa State 28 and Baylor scored on its second snap -- Bell's 38-yard TD pass to a wide open Dominique Zeigler.
With that, the Bears were on their way. Rarely has there been a happier ride back to Waco.
"In our eyes we can play with anybody," Bell said. "We should beat everybody. There's not a game we're going to go into thinking we're not going to win. That's big for us."

That was maybe the worst loss in cyclone history. Definitely most embarassing that I remember. What made it worse was that we actually had a good team.
