    Big 12 Beef

    We have been discussing our size vs. the rest of the conference, so I decided to check it out for real. This is based only on weight, but I have included the heights of those who make my (arbitrary) cutoff: 225#. There are a few players in the league who are just below (Ejim for example) but I had to draw the line somewhere. Here's how the league stacks up size-wise:

    Texas
    245# 6'-10" Sr Chapman
    241# 6'-7" Sr Wangamere
    239# 6'-7" Fr Holmes

    Texas Tech
    256# 6'-10" Sr Lewandowski
    230# 6'-11" Jr Kravic

    Texas A&M
    240# 6'-9" So Roberson
    235# 6'-8" Sr Loubeau
    230# 6'-9" Jr Turner
    230# 6'-10" So Davis

    Baylor
    265# 6'-11" Sr Morgan
    235# 6'-11" So Jones III
    225# 6'-7" Sr Acy

    Oklahoma
    266# 6'-7" Sr Hanore
    243# 6'-8" Jr Fitzgerald
    237# 6'-8" Jr Romero
    235# 6'-10" Jr Casey
    228# 6'-7" Sr Washington

    Oklahoma St.
    270# 6'-11" Jr Jurick (juco)
    245# 6'-8" Sr Williams
    235# 7'-0" Fr Soucek
    230# 6'-7" Fr Nash

    KU
    237# 6'-9" Jr Robinson
    235# 7'-0" Jr Withey

    KSU
    275# 6'-7" Fr Gipson
    250# 6'-11" Jr Henriquez
    230# 6'-8" Jr Watson
    230# 6'-7" Sr Samuels
    225# 6'-10" Fr Diaz
    225# 6'-6" Sr Ojeleye

    Missouri
    267# 6'-9" Sr Moore
    240# 6'-8" Sr Ratliffe

    Iowa State
    270# 6'-8" So White
    250# 6'-11" So Railey
    250# 6'-9" Jr Booker
    245# 6'-9" Fr Gibson
    225# 6'-5" Jr Babb

    Notes:
    - KU is LIGHT - after Withey and Robinson, they don't have much beef.
    - Texas is SHORT. After 6'-10, they have a pair of 6'-7"s, and get shorter from there.
    - Having gone through this little exercise makes me even more sure this league is completely up for grabs. Would not be surprised to see OSU, KSU, Missouri be better than we thought.
    - I don't know that this shows anything other than that we are one of the beef-ier teams in the league.

    Looks like we have a lot more bulk than some of the other teams

    Re: Big 12 Beef

    I like the compilation. Though weight does not mean strength and I'm not about to research any sort of thing of that such, our team is up there overall weight wise.

    White = #2(tie)
    Railey = #8(tie)
    Booker = #8(tie)
    Gibson = #10(tie)

    There are 13 players at or over 245 and we have 4.

    im glad to see that we wont be light weights like we have been in past years so hopefully that means we will be able to push people around in the post that we've been missing since jared homan left

    Re: Big 12 Beef

    I'd be interested to know how many of these players actually see floor time? If a player isn't a 5-10 min. per game player, I don't care how big he is. He's just taking up more bench space.

    Cool data though. I like that we aren't the smallest in the league finally. Quite the turn-around.

    Well...height could still be a minor issue, but if Royce knows how to use his heft to get position on the low block, he will be able to make up for his lack of height when guarding 6'11" guys.

    I'd love to see us play some tough, bruising defense this year.

    I agree - I wish I knew who would get the minutes. Once games start, I could go thru stat sheets and count up mins played... Make a stat called "lb-mins"

    That's the whole take-away from this post. There are not many (if any) good, strong 6'11" in the BigXII this year.

    There are a total of 5. The only one that possibly concerns me is the JUCO from OSU. The rest are not anything close to bangers in the post, and one of them is Railey.

    This isn't a 6'11"/7' post player league anymore. It's a Marshall Moses/Morris twin league, where the best post players are 6'8" or 6'9" and strong. This is why I think it'll be a Royce White league this year.

    In basketball, you can only play 5 at a time, but you need 10 to practice. It seems we don't value the importance of size even if it comes off the bench. I don't think last year's team would have accomplished what it did if it hadn't of been pushed so hard in practice by all the redshirts.

    Even though we probably won't chose to play big line ups very often, we will still have the ability to do so if needed. With Royce, Gibson, Railey and Booker, that is some pretty good height and even some depth with our bigs.
